Jeremy Henman will conduct the eighth summer concert of the Burlington Municipal Band.
Jeremy, who plays trumpet in the band, has been a highly successful general music teacher in the West Burlington schools and this fall, he will be assuming the high school band position that was vacated by Ben Grochowsky’s decision to go to graduate school.
Jeremy’s “theme” for this concert will be “great music” and he’s chosen some challenging and audience-pleasing pieces that you won’t want to miss.
Jeremy’s guest soloist for the concert will be retired Western Illinois University trumpet professor Bruce Briney.
At the end of the band’s Monday night rehearsal, Jeremy expressed a bit of regret that he’d chosen such challenging music since, due to no fault of his own, the rehearsal may have been one of the most chaotic in Muni Band history.
Monday night’s storm rolled through during the rehearsal and Jeremy persevered through storm sirens, temporary evacuation into the (safer) interior hallway, flickering lights and brief complete power outages.
Needless to say, the band’s focus was not positively impacted.
Readers may be interested to know that storm sirens, at least the one at James Madison, sound a somewhat out-of-tune B flat.
Jeremy’s selections will include: “Strike Up the Band” by George Gershwin, “Saturday Serenade” from “Manhattan” by Philip Sparke featuring trumpet soloist Bruce Briney, “American Youth March” by Morton Gould, “Emperata Overture” by Claude T. Smith, “Spitfire!” by Gary P. Gilroy, Florentiner March by Julius Fucik, “Country Gardens” by Percy Grainger, Deep River, arranged by James Swearingen; “Fiddler on the Roof” by Jerry Bock, and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The free, family-friendly concert will be at the Crapo Park bandshell at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Bring a lawn chair or a blanket or sit on provided benches.
In case of rain, the concert will move to the James Madison auditorium at 2132 Madison Avenue.
