Scream star Skeet Ulrich has explained why he is leaving Riverdale.

The 50-year-old actor has played F.P. Jones on the teen drama since its first season but will film his exit from the series when production resumes after the coronavirus pandemic.

But why did Ulrich decide to depart the role of town sheriff and father to fan-favourite Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse)?

Speaking on an Instagram Live on the account of his girlfriend Megan Blake Irwin, Skeet revealed his reasoning for leaving the teen drama behind.

He said in the video: "I'm leaving Riverdale because I got bored creatively.

"How's that? That's the most honest answer."

Ulrich will return for the first three episodes of season 5, due to the coronavirus pandemic leading to the shutting down of production and the final instalments of season 4 being delayed until the next run.

Skeet began his role as Jughead Jones' father FP as a recurring role in the first season before being promoted to the main cast in its second, remaining a fixture in the series until his departure was announced.

His major storylines have included his romance with old flame Alice Cooper ( Madchen Amick ), the arrival of their lovechild and an imposter pretending to being their son, his new role as town sheriff, his role as gang leader of the Serpents, and his ever-evolving relationship with his son,Jughead.

Another major storyline has been FP's on-off romance with Alice Cooper

Also set to depart at the same time as Ulrich is original cast member Marisol Nichols as Veronica's mother, Hermione Lodge.

It is unknown how either of the characters will leave the series, but a time jump after the first three episodes to some years later will certainly give room to create a believable exit.

We do know, however, that the door will be left open for both characters to return in future.

"The truth of it is, and this isn't a spoiler, but neither Hermione nor F.P. are being killed," confirmed Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to TV Line.

We'll have to wait and see how much the time jump changes the town of Riverdale when it airs its new season - whenever that will be.

Riverdale seasons 1 to 4 are available now on Netflix.
