Justin Thomas hoping to avoid Ryder Cup controversies after showing at the Masters
Justin Thomas shot a closing round of 70 to finish on two-over par at the 2025 Masters at Augusta, and now knows exactly what he wants to do next
Justin Thomas is driven to qualify for the American Ryder Cup team this year - and avoid the “self-inflicted” wildcard controversies of the last two USA selections.
The double US PGA champion was picked by Zach Johnson to play in Rome - ahead of current captain Keegan Bradley - despite a poor 2023. And Presidents Cup skipper Jim Furyk ignored him last year to see Thomas miss a team event for the first time since 2016.
Former world No.1 Thomas has a strong 17-7-4, (W-L-H) in team events for his country - and Johnson called him the “heart and soul” of the team after his pick. The World No.8, who shot a closing 70 to finish on two-over par, was just outside the six automatic places going into the Masters.
“Getting into the team automatically this year is an extremely high priority,” he said. I've not really enjoyed the last two team events having to rely on a pick. Its a tough spot to be in, but it's also self-inflicted.

It's a huge goal of mine, but I feel like if I keep doing what I'm doing and get in contention to win some tournaments and start winning some tournaments and majors, then it'll all take care of itself.”
European skipper Luke Donald said last week he wants experience in his team for an away tie in a big hint that Sergio Garcia will be in his team.
Thomas, 31, said: “I think experience is important in any home or away. It's definitely important away. I think it's just totally different. Even if you've had a chance to win tournaments and even Majors, it's a totally different feel at a Ryder Cup.
“The nerves I've felt at that event are unlike anything I've ever experienced in my career, but it's good and fun nerves. But there's two great captains on both sides, and that's why they are who they are. They'll be able to make those decisions themselves.”
