The live-action Powerpuff Girls TV show cast has been confirmed with Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet and Yana Perrault playing the main characters.

It was first announced as being in development back in August 2020 and will follow the 20-somethings trying to navigate their lives after losing their childhoods to crimefighting.

The classic cartoon was originally aired on Cartoon Network and was created by Craig McCracken.

According to Variety, Dove has been cast as Bubbles, Chloe as Blossom, and Yana as Buttercup.

Bubbles is now more interested in the limelight than fighting crime, while Blossom has become a little more "reclusive".

Buttercup, who was the show's tough one, now wants to live a more anonymous life and shed her Powerpuff persona.

Dove, 25, is best known for her role as Mal in the Descendants movie series, while Chloe, 28, has been playing Daisy Johnson in the ABC superhero drama series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Yana, 25, was cast in the Broadway show based on Alanis Morrissette's Jagged Little Pill album and was due to star in a US tour of hit musical Hamilton before theatres were shut down due to the pandemic.

The plot of the upcoming series reads: "The Powerpuff Girls used to be America's pint-sized superheroes. Now they're disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.

"Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?"

Riverdale, American Horror Story and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina director Maggie Kiley will be working on the pilot.

It's going to be interesting for fans to see the girls with real-life hands.

Powerpuff Girls aired between 1998 and 2005

The three characters were created in a laboratory by Professor Utonium after he combined sugar, spice and everything nice.

However, he accidentally added Chemical X into the formula, thus creating the superheroes.

The show ran for 6 seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005.
