'I went to world's largest petrol station - what's inside left me gobsmacked'
A Brit has been left gobsmacked after visiting the world's largest petrol station - home to 120 fuel pumps, a huge store, fresh food and the world's so-called best and largest petrol station toilets
A Brit was left astounded after spending "a whole day" at the world's largest petrol station, transforming what is usually a mundane chore into an extraordinary experience.
Filling up the your car with fuel is hardly a highlight for most drivers, but when embarking on a long trek, it becomes an unavoidable necessity. During such trips, one might pause for a quick bite or a bathroom break, often finding that a motorway service station is the only option for miles around.
Yet, over in the United States, Texas boasts the title of housing the world's biggest petrol station, where topping up your car feels like an excursion to a retail complex. Buc-ee's in Luling—situated approximately 47 miles from Austin—is not just about fuel; it offers a plethora of choices from walls lined with fizzy drink fountains to counters dishing out Texan barbecue delights, in-house made fudge, Beaver Nuggets, an assortment of jerkies, and freshly-baked pastries.
With 50 Buc-ee's across the USA and 35 in Texas alone, these pit-stops have gained an informal reputation for having the most spacious and spotless restrooms. Embracing both classic service values and modern efficiency, Buc-ee's has revolutionised the refuelling stop for their patrons.
Social media food critic, Tod, who has amassed over 800,000 followers on TikTok, documented his impressions of the gargantuan fueling station following his first-ever visit there.
The petrol station sprawls across more than 75,000 square feet and boasts 120 fuel pumps, as per details from Buc-ee's. Last year, it snatched the title of the world's largest, edging out another Buc-ee’s in Sevierville, Tennessee – which spans 74,707 square feet and houses the globe's longest car wash.
TikToker @eatingwithtod dedicated a "full day" to exploring Buc-ee's in Luling, remarking: "This is Buc-ee's in Texas which has 120 petrol pumps lined up in a row, then you walk inside and it's a massive convenience store with sweets, bakeries, merch, and their world famous clean toilets. They've also got a smoked meat section - fresh brisket on the board."
Delving into the food he sampled, Tod disclosed: "I got the three meat bun and I'm not going to lie, it looks a little beige but for a gas station the meat was smoking. I love the sweetness, the barbecue sauce, the bread."
He described the snack as "soft, warm and pillowy" and expressed his willingness to reorder. He also indulged in a sausage enfolded in a tortilla, costing $4.99 [£3.91], which he teamed up with honey mustard dip. "This surprised me, it was fantastic," Tod enthused.
"The sausage wasn't cheap or plasticky," he praised. "Bathe me in it," he joked. Tod also got some pastries at the bakery, including a paddle tail. Tod imparted, having spent $3.79 [£2.97] on the delight: "It's like a cross between a cinnamon roll and a croissant." He said: "The pastry is light and airy and I love the kick of cinnamon."
Tod was astounded to discover an immense wall of beef jerky. He tried the Korean barbecue flavoured jerky and confessed it didn't quite hit the mark due to its "not enough flavour on it".
Tod also showcased the expansive back wall inside the petrol station, adorned with myriad fizzy drink dispensers. He shelled out $4.99 [£3.91] for his purchase but noted that refills are a steal at just $1.99 [£1.56].
Describing the iconic Beaver nuggets, Tod exclaimed they would "blow your socks off". Responding to Tod's video, one viewer remarked: "This is so Texas," Another warmly posted: "Welcome to Texas, buddy."
A third person voiced their wish: "Need this in the UK," and another shared a memory: "I remember driving past these petrol pumps the other week driving from Dallas to Houston.... couldn't believe there was so many!".
Another former Texas resident shared on TikTok: "Bucees was my favourite place when I lived in Texas I miss it so much."
Meanwhile, someone who visited a location in Alabama recalled: "OH MY LORD I got so much stuff. I even bought a Halloween blanket. I'd buy so much more if I go again. We definitely need a UK one."
