The airport is open 24/7 and connects Vizag with most major cities in India. Singapore is the only international destination that connects to the Vizag Airport currently.
The Visakhapatnam International Airport was initially an Indian Navy Airbase called INS Dega. It started operating as a civil airport only in 1981. During that time, only one flight operated here in a day. Right now, this airport is extremely busy 365 days a year, and about 25 lakh passengers utilised the airport in 2022.

Newly Proposed GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport
The newly proposed international airport is in Bhogapuram, and the foundation stone for this airport was laid in 2019. Due to the current airport being a civil enclave, there was a restriction on the number of international flights that could operate in this facility.
This new GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport will have no such restrictions and will increase the number of global destinations one could fly from Vizag.
The AAI is developing the existing airport area along with constructing the new airport. The new airport will have a new terminal comprising four parking bays.
The tentative timeline for completion of work is June 2026. This expansion is estimated to cost INR 240 crore.
