The Agra metro project is one of the largest under-construction metro networks in Uttar Pradesh. It is a vast rapid transit system with 29 metro stations on two metro corridors totalling 29.65 km. The Detailed Project Report of the Agra Metro Project was submitted to the State Government of Uttar Pradesh in June 2014. However, it got the Central Government’s approval in February 2019. The delay in approval was due to the formation of the new government and revised metro policies.
The construction work of the Agra Metro Project is now underway. The operations of the “priority corridor” with six metro stations, started in March 2024. The “priority corridor” section includes stations such as Taj East Gate, Basai Metro Station, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehabad Road Metro Station, and Jama Masjid. The first three stations of the route are elevated, while the other three are underground.

Out of the total estimated cost, the authority has planned to spend Rs.8379.62 crore on the Agra Metro Corridor 1 (Yellow Line) construction, and the remaining Rs.4520.38 crore will be spent on the construction work of Agra Metro Corridor 2 (Blue Line).
Agra Metro Project has been set to be financed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Central Government in an equal equity basis. The UP Govt. also got a loan of approximately Rs.4860 crore approved from the European Investment Bank in December 2021 for the construction work.
Agra Metro - Status Update
The first pier cap was installed on the Agra Metro Taj East Gate to Sikandra line. It was installed in Corridor 1 in the ISBT - Sikandra Section. This section is part of the package AGCC-05. The package is being developed by Ceigall India Ltd. Under this section, they will be working on a 3.725 km elevated section. The elevated section will connect RBS Ramp in Khandari to Sikandra. There will also be three elevated metro stations in this section, namely ISBT, Sikandra, and Guru Ka Taal.
In another update, all stations of Agra Metro on its priority corridor from Taj East Gate to Mankeshwar have received the Platinum Ration from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This rating makes the Agra metro a Green Mass Rapid Transit System (GMRTS). In addition, Agra Metro has also received ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certifications in environmental management and safety management.
Line 2 under Phase 1 of the Agra metro will be designed and constructed by L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure division. The expected cost of this project is somewhere between INR 1,000 Crore and INR 2,500 Crore. L&T will be executing the construction of around a 15.09 km elevated viaduct. A 2.61 km long depot will also be constructed along the stretch from Kalindi Vihar to Agra Cantonment.
Agra Metro Project: Impact on Real Estate Development
Once operational, the Agra Metro Project will benefit over 20 Lakh people living in the city. It will help improve the transport system and reduce the traffic congestion in Agra. Agra Metro will be one of the best environment-friendly sources for people to commute within the city while enjoying a smooth and safe travel experience.
While linking various travel destinations to each other through transit points and enhancing connectivity, Agra Metro routes will help boost real estate development in the city. It has been observed in various other cities that a little push towards enhancing intra-city connectivity leads to both residential and commercial real estate development.
While realtors develop more properties in localities with improved living standards and enhanced connectivity to major parts of the city, buyers also show their willingness to purchase one in such areas.
Along with the under-construction Agra Metro Project, there are various other infrastructural developments, such as the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Agra-Gwalior Expressway, that will help reduce the travel time while leading the Agra Real Estate Market to flourish in the future.
