The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday it will take over the investigation of crimes allegedly committed by an area man who ended up being shot in the leg by Michigan State Police.
At issue is a 31-year-old Chesterfield Township man who was involved in a road rage incident Sunday that came to a halt when he allegedly pulled a long gun on police after he crashed in a cornfield.
Officials with the Sheriff’s Office decided they will be the lead investigative agency for the criminal incidents leading up to a Michigan State Police trooper shooting the suspect.
“The MCSO will not be investigating the officer involved shooting,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. “Michigan State Police will retain that investigation.”
Authorities said a bulletin was broadcast to law enforcement agencies Sunday to be on the lookout for a white Jeep Cherokee SUV involved in a felonious assault in Shelby Township.
A sheriff’s deputy spotted the Jeep driving near the area of Van Dyke and 35 Mile roads in Bruce Township. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. Other law enforcement agencies, including Michigan State Police, assisted, following the suspect until he drove off the road and into a field on Van Dyke.
“The suspect exited his vehicle with a long gun in hand,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “He ignored law enforcement commands to put the weapon down and show his hands.”
The state trooper fired several shots, striking the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken into custody without further
Authorities said the suspect was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. He is
expected to be turned over to the Sheriff’s Office custody Monday.
The trooper, a 25-year veteran and assigned to the Metro North Post, was not injured. He was placed on administrative leave, which is normal for an officer-involved shooting.
Pending the results of the ongoing investigation, charges will be submitted to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials said they anticipate the suspect to be arraigned on Wednesday.
