Photochrom photography 1890 – 1910: The British Isles in Colour
A series of books from Lone Fox Publishing showcasing Photochrom photography, an early type of colour photography that brings to life scenes from an era that we usually visualise in black and white. The technique was mainly used for postcards and as a result the photographers concentrated on subjects of interest to the visitor and hopefully the recipient of their card; beautiful locations and the seaside are natural favourites, but also historic and civic landmarks, social scenes, parks and train stations.

The first few in this series of illustrated books available now are:

South West England and the Scilly Isles, featuring the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset.
'A colourful tint on our picture postcard past. A new book featuring a revolutionary form of colour photography has brought 1900s Devon to life'. As featured in Devon Life.
'A fascinating glimpse at old photos from Devon'. As featured in the Devon Herald.

Southern England and the Channel Islands, featuring the counties of Hampshire, Sussex, Kent, Berkshire, Oxford, Buckinghamshire and Essex, plus London.
'Colourful Sussex Postcards give us a glimpse into Victorian and Edwardian life. A pioneering technique in the 19th Century captured iconic Sussex seaside scenes and market towns vistas in vivid hues giving us a fascinating look into history'. As featured in Sussex Life.
'Remarkable photos of London in 1900'. As featured in The Londonist.

Central England, featuring Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.
'The images on these pages showcase the photochrom process and reveal just how vividly it brings the past to life.' As featured in The Countryman.

Northern England and the Isle of Man (historic names of counties): Isle of Man, Cheshire, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, Westmorland.

Forthcoming in the series are Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Further series featuring photography from Europe, America and the Middle East are also planned.

The photochroms have been chosen from the Library of Congress Photochrom Prints Collection, Washington D.C.. Some of the views remain virtually unchanged while many have radically changed, underlying the importance of such archives.
