We are running out of time: on climate, on gender equality, on the fight against hunger. Over a third of the Sustainable Development Goals targets are stalling or regressing: inequalities are growing and the number of people facing hunger is increasing. Last year, $2.4 trillion were spent on military expenditures, and another $7 trillion in direct and indirect fossil fuel subsidies. We have the resources to achieve the economic, social and climate progress we collectively want. The money is simply not going to the right place. We need an acceleration in ambition to achieve the #GlobalGoals by 2030.

Today, Francis Ghesquiere, David Lallemant and Olivia Jensen have announced the winner & awardees of the Averted Disaster Award 2024 at the Understanding Risk Global Forum, honoring outstanding initiatives that enhance safety in our communities for all: http://wrld.bg/L5LW50Slohs 🏆 Winner: Today we named the Lamu County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) from #Kenya as the Averted Disaster Award 2024 Winner for averting at least 5 major #disasters since its inception in 2016. Particularly in 2023, the region faced a compounded humanitarian crisis due to severe flooding and a cholera outbreak, following the worst drought in 4 decades. The centre undertook extensive preparatory measures such as identifying and stocking 12 evacuation centres, evacuating 4,900 at-risk families (approximately 18,000 people), and relocating 20,000 livestock and property to higher ground. The evacuation was completed 21 days prior to the #floods. Remarkably, no human or animal lives were lost during the floods. Shee Kupi, the Lamu County Director of Disaster Risk Management and Peace Building, received the award on stage. 🎖️ Runner Up: Southern Africa Anticipatory Action Working Group (RAAWG), represented by FAO, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC and World Food Programme Southern Africa in recognition of strengthening inter-agency efforts towards regional anticipatory action for climate shocks in the region. Their work was especially important during the 2023 El Niño event as RAAWG members activated #AnticipatoryAction in eSwatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Collectively, RAAWG reached more than 2 million people and unlocked close to USD 31 million in anticipatory finance, marking the largest funding of anticipatory assistance in #SouthernAfrica and the highest number of parallel activations in a region to date. ⭐ Honourable Mention: The Taiwan Reyhanli Centre for World Citizens 台灣雷伊漢勒世界公民中心, located on the Turkish-Syrian border. In the wake of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023, the #EarthquakeResistant centre played a critical role in #HumanitarianRelief, providing shelter, food, electricity and essential services to nearly 2,000 people. ⭐ Honourable Mention: #DisasterResponse Force (DRF) in Greater #Hyderabad Municipal Corporation for being #India's first city-specific disaster rescue force. The DRF has built trust among Hyderabad's citizens by addressing over 13,000 emergencies, demonstrating its effectiveness. ⭐ Honourable Mention: the The World Bank for their grant-funded Improving #ClimateData and Information Management Project. This project has revolutionized climate data quality in #Jamaica, empowering authorities to better predict and respond to flooding dangers. With the installation of 72 Automatic Weather Stations, it created the Caribbean's first real-time weather reporting system, benefiting 1.2 million people.
