In 1958, Waterloo was the first Canadian university to offer co-op — gaining paid work experience while earning a degree. Today, the University of Waterloo has the largest co-op program at a research-intensive university in the world, with more than 70 per cent of students gaining up to two years of employment experience during their studies. Ron Ojanpera (BASc ’69) and Elsa Patterson (BES in progress) share how co-op has impacted their career trajectories in this #UWaterlooMagazine feature. In 2013, as the global maker movement gained momentum with desktop 3D printers revolutionizing rapid prototyping, four University of Waterloo alumni, Jesus Zozaya, Katarina Ilić, James Pickard and Alroy Almeida, identified a gap in electronic hardware development. Printing circuit boards remained slow, complex and largely outsourced. They envisioned a new approach: a machine that could prototype printed circuit boards (PCBs), the backbone of modern electronics, using silver-based conductive materials. This vision became the foundation for Voltera and its V-One and NOVA printers, designed to bring the speed and accessibility of 3D printing to electronics. “Being an engineering student at Waterloo shapes the way that you learn to solve a lot of problems with very limited variables.” After being turned away from 15 hair salons because stylists didn’t have the training to work with her Afro-curly hair, Aileen Agada-Davidson, MBET transformed a personal challenge into a national solution. While still an undergraduate student, she co-founded BeBlended, an online marketplace that seamlessly connects people with Afro-curly hair textures to specialized stylists, offering a user experience similar to Airbnb. Today, BeBlended has grown into a thriving Waterloo-based company, completing thousands of transactions and supporting more than 1,500 clients and 150 stylists across Canada.
