SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D) and USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center welcomed students from 3rd to 12th grade for the Energy of STEM summer science camp at USC These camps offer a focused exploration into renewable energy, chemistry, electronics, coding, and mechanical studies. Participation in the Energy of STEM camp challenged students to design and construct an energy transfer machine utilizing the provided curriculum and construction materials. SoCalGas volunteers were present to assist students during these engaging, hands on activities, helping to foster skills including soldering, microscope usage, and tool handling. Most students are from title I schools, and were provided with lunch and a t-shirt, construction materials, and registration fees, all covered by SoCalGas. Wondering how we can keep the lights on when the grid is down? Meet Mainspring Energy linear generator—a versatile potential solution to support California's carbon neutrality goals! This innovative technology uses a low-temperature reaction of air and fuel to generate electricity efficiently with low NOx emissions. What makes it special? It's fuel flexibility allows it to operate on natural gas and renewable fuels like hydrogen, making it potentially adaptable to various energy needs while maintaining low emissions. Recently demonstrated at a grocery store in Colton, California, this 230 kW generator—designed , installed, and integrated by Mainspring Energy—consistently achieved over 40% efficiency across different loads while meeting strict emissions standards set by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. This demonstration project received funding in part from both the California Energy Commission and SoCalGas Research Development & Demonstration (RD&D), supporting its successful implementation. Curious to learn more about how this technology potentially contributes to a cleaner future in California?
