Looking for a smarter way to tackle problems, no matter your field? It starts with the right mindset. 🧠 Join us for the "Mindsets of Human-Centered Design" workshop and explore how these six critical mindsets can transform the way you solve challenges: 💬 Collaboration – Solve complex problems by working effectively with others, leveraging diverse perspectives. 🗣 Communication – Share ideas clearly and listen actively to ensure everyone’s on the same page. 🎨 Creativity – Think outside the box to generate fresh solutions that break away from the obvious. 🔬 Experimentation – Test and iterate on your ideas without fear of failure, turning lessons into better results. 👥 Human-Centeredness – Focus on the needs of people to create solutions that truly resonate. 🤔 Metacognition – Reflect on your own thinking process to make smarter, more thoughtful decisions. This isn’t just for designers—it’s for anyone who wants to improve problem-solving skills and boost project outcomes in any setting. 📅 Thursday, September 19, 2024 | 2-4 PM 📍 SCD Classroom 1002 📝 Register now: https://buff.ly/4ggX5OI

One of the most common things we hear at Siebel Center for Design is students asking, 'Why didn’t I discover you earlier?' This year, we’re excited to change that by connecting with students right from the start of their four-year journey at the University of Illinois, ensuring they make the most of everything SCD has to offer. In collaboration with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Student Affairs and their Welcome Week program, we kicked off the new academic year by welcoming thousands of new freshmen who dove into the fundamentals of human-centered design through our program, 'The Quest.' They engaged with a series of open-ended questions designed to challenge their thinking and spark creativity. In addition to 'The Quest,' we're offering our 'Exercising Empathy' class this semester, tailored specifically for freshmen, along with numerous workshops throughout the year. These experiences aim to immerse students in design thinking early and often, equipping them with valuable skills that will enhance both their academic and professional lives. Here’s to a year of innovation, exploration, and impactful design! And to more freshmen in our building! ✨ #SCD #Illinois #FirstYearExperience #HumanCenteredDesign #DesignThinking

It was awesome to kick-off the school year with the UNI HIGH teachers at the Siebel Center for Design! We hosted a Human-Centered Design showcase and shared ways to integrate HCD in school curricula with the teachers. Jason Boumstein and Julie Bar from New Trier High School District shared their experiences in integrating HCD in their work with the UNI HIGH teachers. It was exciting to see the HCD League of Schools in action! We look forward to collaborating with more schools to bring HCD to K-12 education. For ways to integrate HCD in school STEM curricula, check out our recent publications: Shehab, S., & Bergandine, D. (2024). Human Centered Product Management | Agile Project Management | Data Driven | MS in Technology Management @UIUC

Last week marked the end of my internship at the Siebel Center for Design and the past three months have been an incredible learning experience. I was introduced to Human-Centered Design, a concept that plays a pivotal role in how products, services, and experiences are created today. During my internship, I got a chance to work on five incredible projects that helped me embrace the human-centered designer in me and also broaden my creative mindset. From the pool full of knowledge I gained, here are a few key concepts I'd like to share: 💡 When addressing a problem, it's essential to consider three key aspects: desirability, viability and feasibility. Desirability involves understanding and prioritizing what users truly want and need in a product or service. Viability ensures that the solution is financially sustainable and aligns with the overall business goals. Lastly, feasibility confirms that the solution is technically possible and can be effectively implemented. Together, these aspects form a balanced approach to creating successful and impactful products or services. 💡 A user-first and user-centric approach means always putting the user at the forefront of the design process. This approach ensures that products and services are tailored to meet the specific needs and preferences of the users. I applied this mindset in my projects by using processes like user journey mapping, user interviews, and empathy mapping, which helped me gain a deeper understanding of the users and create solutions that truly resonate with them. 💡 The third concept, which we used throughout the internship and is my favorite, revolves around empathy, collaboration, and iteration. Empathy is all about truly understanding the user, going beyond what they say or do to grasp how they feel and think. Collaboration, on the other hand, means working together in a way that builds on each other's ideas. Instead of pointing out what's wrong with an idea, you find ways to improve and expand on it, this is the "Yes, And" approach. Finally, iteration is the process of refining and improving solutions through repeated cycles of feedback and testing, ensuring we reach the best possible outcome. None of this would have been possible without my supportive mentors, Amber Dewey Schultz, Miriam Salah, and Sidney Sprunger, thank you for fostering an environment of continuous learning. A special shoutout to my talented teammates Delancy Xiao, Aaron Mukhopadhyay, and Vikramjeet Singh Kundu. As a team, we brought so many great ideas to the table and accomplished a lot. Looking forward to discussions on approaching products with a human-centered lens and exploring ways I can contribute to innovative projects. I’m excited to share insights and collaborate with others who are passionate about creating impactful solutions. Let’s chat! ✨ P.S. I’ve been constantly updating my portfolio. Feel free to check it out, and I’d love to hear any suggestions or feedback!
