With the excitement of the first Video Game Law Summit in Shanghai (which just took place during #ChinaJoy), I haven't had the chance to debrief about it, but in June, I had the pleasure of attending the ⚖️Private Practice Day at Legal Innovators California, organized by Cosmonauts and Artificial Lawyer. The theme of this year’s event was, as one could expect, generative AI – but, with a refreshing emphasis on practical implementation. 💡📝 🌐Framed by the keynote speech from David Wang, Chief Innovation Officer at Wilson Sonsini, several panels explored how law firms can transition from “playing” with AI to practically implementing AI, including panels like Contracting in the Age of AI, Harnessing the Power of Generative AI, and Revolutionizing Litigation with LLMs. 📚 Many panelists and speakers noted that while we’re still in the early generation of practical generative AI tools, now is the time to start taking advantage of the innovations available, and to start preparing for innovations ahead, including by evaluating untapped and unstructured data law firms have – keeping in mind ethics obligations to clients. ⏰Several speakers, including Marlene Gebauer, Assistant Director of Innovation at Mayer Brown, and John LaBarre, General Counsel at Harvey, pronounced the near-end of the billable hour as AI tools create more predictable, more efficient legal workflows, allowing lawyers to focus on outcomes rather than the time taken to reach outcomes. 🤖 In a first for the event, we also had the pleasure of hearing the pitches for several exciting legal tools, providing a sneak peek into the present and shortly arriving innovations in legal technology. 👏 A huge thank you to the speakers and panelists who made the event both insightful and practical. I look forward to implementing what I learned in my own practice at Pillar Legal, P.C. #LegalInnovatorsCalifornia #AI #LegalTech
