Women and adolescent girls in India face significant skilling gaps due to limited access to quality education and vocational training, coupled with socio-cultural barriers and gender biases. These gaps hinder their employment opportunities and economic empowerment, thus perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. SEWA Bharat, through its experience, has observed that the concept of skill development should go beyond imparting technical and managerial skills. For holistic development, there must be a focus on personality development, digital and financial literacy, life skills, and knowledge of the competitive and ever-changing environment. Last week I got to visit a school in Karnatake, India that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is helping support. The school has adopted a system called the Model Schools Pathways Program - a collaborative-led initiative that aims to establish model schools as a pathway to scale best practices and improve quality of education in Karnatake, India. Interventions that have been implemented in this school are: Sanitation and Hygiene facilities, Building as Learning Aid, Child Friendly Libraries, and Science labs. Visiting this school and meeting the teachers, headmaster, and all the partners involved in improving education for these kids was one of the most meaningful experiences of my career.
