About us
UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) advances fire safety knowledge to address the world’s unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers. Through advanced fire science, rigorous research, extensive outreach and education in collaboration with our international network of partners, we impart stakeholders with the information, tools and resources that enable them to make better, more fire-safe decisions that ultimately save lives and property. FSRI is part of UL Research Institutes, a world-leading independent safety science institution. Through objective investigation, we sense emerging risks and work to keep people safer at home, at work, and in the world. As our research evolves to meet new global challenges, we are examining new risks presented by artificial intelligence, renewable energy systems, environmental toxicology, and wildfires.

FSRI post-doctoral researcher PARHAM DEHGHANI and lead research engineer Matt DiDomizio are creating a software that can measure heat flux over planar surfaces using infrared thermography, which will aid researchers within thermal engineering disciplines. Read their latest published peer-reviewed journal article “HFITS: An Analysis Tool for Calculating Heat Flux to Planar Surfaces using Infrared Thermography” to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gP9w-Rr5 HFITS is comprehensive in its functionalities, user-friendly interface, and wide-ranging applications- establishing it as an indispensable tool for researchers, engineers, and educators. This work is a key development in thermal analysis research as it allows for parallel development, as prior to this research, researchers analyzed heat flux cases individually. Their work is continuing to develop and will have additional features and cases in the future to expand its use in thermal engineering and fire safety research. #ThermalResearch #Software #ThermalEngineering #FireSafetyResearch

FSRI has been working the last year to build a new reporting system for the fire service that will change the future of making data-driven decisions. Today we are excited to announce the launch of Version 1. By January 2026, this system will officially replace NFIRS. Follow the new NERIS Data page for regular updates. Make sure your department is #NERISready.
NERIS Version 1 has officially launched. This platform is a critical step forward for U.S. fire departments managing today’s complex fire environment. Thanks to the 60+ beta departments for their invaluable testing and feedback - and here's to the next 100 joining us this month. https://lnkd.in/gwmcHn5C #NERISReady

If you were not able to make the live NERIS Data webinar earlier this week, the recording is now available. Watch to learn more about the upcoming Version 1 launch taking place next week. #NERISready
Now is the time to get NERIS ready. If you didn't get a chance to watch the webinar yesterday, here's a link to watch the recording. https://lnkd.in/g-SF3xAy We brought together a panel of experts from - DHS Science and Technology Directorate - U.S. Fire Administration - Firefighter Close Calls - Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department - Mesa Fire and Medical Department (Arizona) - Fire Safety Research Institute.

Calcination depth surveys are used by fire investigators to identify areas of relative fire exposure to gypsum wallboard (GWB). Moisture originating from fire sprinklers, suppression, standing water, and other sources can be absorbed into GWB, affecting calcination depth measurements. It is unclear how such moisture exposures impact the findings of fire investigators who use this methodology. Through new research, FSRI aims to investigate the impact of moisture exposures on the accuracy and reliability of calcination depth surveys and support future fire investigations. FSRI’s new fire service technical panel recently held their first meeting in Philadelphia, PA to advise on the research project Fire Dynamics and Firefighting Tactics in Multi-Story Residential Structures. Over the course of the three days, they were onboarded to the project and toured the test structures designed by FSRI. They also reflected on their own experiences responding to fires in these types of structures and shared valuable feedback to guide this project’s experimental setup.
