About us
Denver is working to enable a sustainable, resilient, climate-safe future in collaboration with fellow departments, other units of government, and community partners. Cities generate nearly 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions, that makes us a key part of the climate solution. In 2020, Denverites voted to raise the local sales and use tax to create the Climate Protection Fund. This unique fund raises $40M+ a year to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, support climate adaptation and create new jobs.

Our Executive Director Elizabeth Babcock teamed up with Carbon Neutral Cities Alliance to discuss the ways cities can (and are) address extreme heat in Fast Company. Read on:
The long-term fix, of course, requires us to stop burning fossil fuels. But there are other short-term actions that can ultimately save lives. http://f-st.co/ygmKgl2

Denver is using clean energy to help our communities thrive. The city has installed 12 community solar arrays at several recreation centers, nonprofits, and schools. These arrays help power nearby buildings. A lot of these solar arrays are built to generate extra energy which the city donates to offset the energy bills of Denver Public Schools families. By next summer, the city will install four more solar arrays around our communities. Solar energy is helping Denver become a healthier and more resilient city. With 300 days of sunshine every year, solar is an ample energy source that will help power the city for years to come. Denver is building healthy, sustainable places to live, work and visit. Denver is supporting 17 buildings to be all-electric – these include affordable housing units, restaurants and cultural centers. By next summer, 10 of those buildings will be open for business, providing pollution-free heating, cooling, cooking, hot water and more amenities to Denverites. Latino Cultural Arts Center is leading the way with the all-electric construction of their new Cultural Campus. This campus, rooted in the Latino experience, will serve people of all ages. It will merge artistic and cultural development with economic empowerment. Executive Director Alfredo Reyes says, “My vision is that someday, not too far from now, we’ll be able to have students come to [LCAC] to learn about heat pumps, electricians, etc. and apply what they’re learning. This is not only a cultural and philosophic issue, its also economic. It’s really important for everyone to be able to participate in the green economy through their own cultural legacies.” Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WehJ97 📸 Kalen Jesse Photography Co. Denver is moving toward a cleaner, safer and thriving future. To succeed, the city needs the talent and skills of a trained workforce. The Climate Protection Fund helps create greener career paths by funding programs and training that expand this exciting new workforce. The job placement rate for trainees in Denver’s green workforce program has increased by 76% in the past year! These trainings have helped people like Rachel start a new career as an electrician. She says, "The knowledge, skills, and patience that I've cultivated so far might be my favorite part of this challenging career," she reflects. "Each time you try something new, even a physically or technically very difficult task, you improve." Learn more: https://bit.ly/3WehJ97 Mike Johnston City and County of Denver

Exciting news! The Denver Regional Council of Governments has been awarded $199.7M from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This Climate Pollution Reduction Grant will centralize rebates, provide energy advising, and create job opportunities for 3.3 million Coloradans. In alignment with the Biden Administration's Justice40 Initiative, 47% of these funds are dedicated to low-income and disadvantaged communities. As a leader in climate action, Denver is primed to collaborate with our neighboring communities to expand our nation-leading climate programs. We are excited to support DRCOG's initiative to facilitate the transition from gas to all-electric appliances for more people in the Denver metro area. By reducing gas usage and energy efficiency in buildings, we aim to reduce pollution significantly. We are honored to have played a role in developing this program. This grant will streamline the process of making buildings energy-efficient and all-electric, making sustainable choices more accessible and affordable for our community.
