About us
The mission of the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® (ACS GCI) is to catalyze the implementation of innovative approaches to chemistry and engineering that enable sustainable development across the globe. We truly believe that innovation in green chemistry and engineering holds the key to solving many environmental and human health issues facing our world today. Thus, ACS GCI efforts focus on strategically promoting and advancing green chemistry. The Green Chemistry Institute (GCI) was founded in 1997 by representatives from industry, government, and academia. In 2001, the GCI joined the American Chemical Society to pursue their joint interests in the discovery and design of chemical products and processes that address global environmental issues.

Access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is the most basic human need for health and well-being. Billions of people lack access to these services, and water demand is rising due to population growth and increasing needs from sectors such as agriculture and energy. Chemists and engineers have skills essential to enable the delivery of safe drinking water to more people. That's why ACS's 2024 Sustainability Summit on December 11 will spotlight the vital role of chemistry in advancing U.N. Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Join academia, industry, and government experts for our free, virtual event as they explore how chemistry can drive global progress toward this fundamental human right. The ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable gathered in the greater Frankfurt area of Germany late October for their fall meeting. In a packed two-day schedule, the Roundtable moved forward a myriad of projects, from tools to grants to publications and more, as well as planning for their 20th anniversary events in 2025. Participants had the opportunity to visit host company Boehringer Ingelheim and learn about their sustainability strategy.

This recent publication from scientists at Merck (https://lnkd.in/eMRCuwJN) highlights the innovative use of both fluorination and biocatalysis in the development of a green, sustainable manufacturing route for the synthesis of the Belzutifan, an approved compound for the treatment of Hippel–Lindau (VHL) disease. The ACS GCIPR Reagents Guides (https://lnkd.in/eJUjHHBA) provide an intensive resource to enable chemists to rapidly make similar, informed, sustainable decisions when selecting specific reagents for their syntheses. With 28 guides currently available, topics range from classical transformations (alcohol oxidation, Boc deprotection, etc.) all the way to include key methodologies such as fluorination and emerging technologies like biocatalysis that are showcased in the Belzutifan work.
