In his new book, “Partisan Hostility and American Democracy: Explaining Political Divisions and When They Matter,” Rochester political scientist James Druckman argues that negative rhetoric has changed how both elites and average citizens—including his own students—talk about and engage in politics, even as “the perception of the divide in this country is greater than the divide itself. Those perceptions dwarf the actual divides.”

Meet Melbot V3. Standing just two and a half feet tall, Melbot is made primarily of aluminum and plastic, held together by nuts and bolts...and love. A team of 20 Rochester engineering undergraduates recently designed this mini robot for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Lunabotics Challenge—a university-based, yearlong event. The program has robots tasked with driving, digging, and depositing regolith—the fragmented rock material that covers the moon’s surface—in a lunar simulant at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. “Melbot was a total team effort,” says Alex Saunders ’25, a mechanical engineering major. “We’re very proud of our robot.” Congratulations team! We're excited to share that the NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub, of which the University of Rochester is a lead partner, was selected as one of only 12 national Tech Hub award winners and is receiving $40 million in funding from the US Economic Development Administration to elevate the burgeoning semiconductor industry in Upstate New York. “I firmly believe that no region has more momentum as a center for innovation-led growth, and this funding will enable us to leverage our collective strengths and assets to build an ever-better future together as a global leader in semiconductor research and manufacturing," says University President Sarah Mangelsdorf. The NY SMART I-Corridor Tech Hub spans the Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse region and has engaged more than 100 institutions, assembling commitments from industry, academia, labor, non-profit, government, and other private sector members. Senator Chuck Schumer was in Rochester for the announcement, celebrating this prestigious federal Tech Hub designation and funding established in the landmark CHIPS and Science Act.
