In Riga, Latvia, an adaptive reuse project of a former shipping warehouse, is set to become a sustainable community space. When completed, the project will be home to a multi-modal transportation hub, with cafes, shops, and dining, as well as spacious outdoor plazas and gardens. To reduce the need for new structural elements, excess construction waste, and the buildings carbon footprint, the existing reinforced concrete was used for support. This structure was reinforced with locally sourced, native timber elements. Recycled bricks are planned to be used on the exterior of the building, acting as solar screens to filter sunlight and reduce solar heat gain. In a nod to Latvia’s historical production for pottery, the roof will be made of ceramic tiles produced in the region and adding a curvature to the roof for added character to the building massing. Planned to open in 2028, the marina and facility are expected to have roughly 800,000 visitors within its first year of operation. Cruise ships, recreational boating, ferries, taxis, and bicycles are all expected to be a part of the transportation hub. Documented in DETAIL 6.2024 Climate and Resources: Het Bosbad Housing in Eindhoven (NL) by GAAGA Circularity, simple reversibility and the desire to create residential space in proximity to the natural environment were the conceptual focus of the housing structure Het Bosbad. About 400 peeled eucalyptus logs provide the design with a striking visual impression. The reuse of these construction components is possible without difficulty. For the design, the Delft-based architecture office Gaaga found inspiration in the Japanese nature therapy method of #ShinrinYoku. Translated literally, the term means “forest bathing”. The property offers ideal preconditions for this purpose. Bordering a large park, it is situated at the northeastern tip of the urban development zone of Bosrijk, west of Eindhoven. According to Gaaga, 85% of building materials can be reused or recycled. Hardwood boards that previously served as embankment were applied as facade siding. The primary structure consists of prefabricated concrete elements with detachable bolt connectors. Christiansen Group, RUM has designed an ultra-modern and future-proof headquarters: A 9,550 m² headquarters with modern offices and training rooms, a bright atrium and a large showroom. One of the company‘s most important sales products is electric cars – 100 charging stations will be installed in the new parking lots. The building will be DGNB Gold certified. This means that this new building is demonstrably sustainable. The Masaryčka building in #Prague incorporates 7 storeys in its eastern section with 9 storeys at its western end and is defined by circulation routes which will provide access to new civic spaces for the city. Integrating with Czech Railways’ modernisation of the historic Masaryk Railway Station that is creating a new public plaza partially over the rail tracks, Masaryčka will enhance accessibility to the railway platforms below and provide new pedestrian routes between Florenc and Hybernská on either side of the station. Bordered by the railway platforms to the south, Na Florenci street to the north, and the Wilsonova elevated freeway to the east, Masaryčka has been constructed on a derelict site that has stood abandoned for several decades. To the west, Masaryčka replaces the existing car park on Havlíčkova Boulevard with a new public square with interchanges between city’s rail, tram and bus networks; defining a welcoming gateway to the city for suburban rail passengers as well as those using the express rail link that is currently under-construction to Prague’s international airport. Located 1km east of the city centre’s Staroměstské Square, the design establishes a dialogue with the architecture and urbanism of Prague’s Old Town – known as ‘the golden city of 100 spires’. External fins within Masaryčka’s façade contribute to solar shading and transform the project’s horizontal composition to the verticality of its western façade that faces the spires of the Old Town. A cascade of terraces divides the two buildings with similar terracing on the eastern façade giving every office floor direct access to generous outdoor spaces. Communal roof gardens offer views across the city while Na Florenci street is transformed into a tree-lined avenue. Targeting LEED Platinum certification, Masaryčka’s design, procurement and construction and has prioritised local suppliers and materials with a high recycled content to meet 2025 targets for embodied & operational carbon established by the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge. Rising from the center of Norway like an urban treehouse for the future, Mjøstårnet, also known as "The Tower of Lake Mjøsa," is an amazing representation of sustainable architecture. This 85.4-meter-tall wooden behemoth is the highest wooden structure in the world, demonstrating that wood is no longer only used for cabins and cottages but can now compete with steel and concrete on the skyline. From the surrounding woodlands to the imposing work of art in front of you, picture yourself standing on the viewing platform and following the path of the timber. It's like seeing the transformation of the natural world into a sustainable metropolis in front of your eyes. Mjøstårnet, built with 3,500 cubic meters of wood, or about 14,000 trees, is an example of what can be achieved when environmental responsibility and innovation come together. In Aiguamúrcia, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, on an olive and almond tree farm, an adaptive reuse project saved what used to be an old shelter for farm workers. Paying careful attention to not damage the orginal structure, the buildings were rebuilt using local stone, as were the terraces and walls on the grounds, reminiscent of traditional building methods in the area. The property utilized locally sourced natural materials throughout the interiors of the space, with natural wood and terracotta tiles. The thick stone walls provide a strong thermal barrier, limiting the solar gain within the interior spaces and the terracotta roof limits heat absorption in summer months. Strategically placed windows and doors allow for lots of natural sunlight throughout the interior spaces limiting the need for energy usage. The limited the energy needed is provided via solar energy, lowering the carbon footprint of the property significantly. This project is a fantastic example of modern adaptive reuse projects with limited environmental impact and utilizing the resources within reach.
