We're backing Homeless Link's policy briefing on ending migrant homelessness. With recommendations including providing free immigration and welfare advice, and a cross-departmental approach, we urge the government to act on these issues, which are driving so many to homelessness. Really inspiring to see Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, Mayor of London Borough of Newham speaking about health inequalities alongside racial inequalities with Cancer Research UK (CRUK). This is something we encounter regularly while the people we support are navigating their journeys away from homelessness, and it's encouraging to see the Mayor acknowledging and being a public voice for these issues.
Celebrating South Asian Heritage Month! 🌍 Last week our Race Equality & Equity Network hosted an internal event with Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, Mayor of Newham, who spoke passionately about this year’s theme, ‘Free to Be Me'. This was a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of individuality and inclusivity, ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported. Rokhsana also shared insightful perspectives on the impact of cancer inequalities in Newham, which is home to a large South Asian population. She highlighted the unique challenges faced by these communities and the importance of addressing these disparities to ensure equitable healthcare for all. A huge thank you to Rokhsana Fiaz for her time and inspiring words. Let’s continue to celebrate diversity, raise awareness, and work towards a future where everyone is truly free to be themselves! #SouthAsianHeritageMonth #FreeToBeMe #CancerAwareness #DiversityAndInclusion London Borough of Newham

"I’m dreaming of all the things I can do now I’m back doing what I love" David first experienced challenges when his parents' marriage broke down when he was young. Now, with a roof over his head at Your Place, and kick-starting his love for the Sea Cadets, things are looking up. Experiencing homelessness is about so much more than a roof over your head. Re-igniting passions and hobbies are a huge step towards feeling like yourself again. Read David's story: https://lnkd.in/eRqG8_M4

At Your Place, we were appalled, but not surprised, to see the new report from the College of Policing and National Police Chiefs' Council, which affirmed the 'endemic' of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). The details are harrowing, with over a million reports of this nature being recorded in the year 2022-2023. 44% of the women we worked with in 2023-2024 were survivors of VAWG, and our work ensuring specialist support for women experiencing homelessness is ongoing. Last year, we launched our Women's Development Strategy, which outlines the work we are doing to safely support survivors on their journey away from homelessness. Please read the document in the link below, and share with any others who would be interested in this vital collaborative work. https://lnkd.in/gBsBcwFd

The #KingsSpeech is an opportunity to get us on track to ending homelessness. The government can end the criminalisation of homelessness by finally scrapping the Vagrancy Act. After 200 years, its time for change. We've written to the government with Crisis and 28 others: https://lnkd.in/eQZ_frWv
