LIVE NOW: Ep6 - DDOA Career Path Series with Omar Abedin - Johnson & Johnson Canada - 2002 - 2004 In the last video, I talked about the amazing journey with Johnson & Johnson Middle East. - Moving back to Dubai after a 3 month stint in Karachi, where my daughter was born. - Moving to Saudi Arabia to help setup the KSA business. - Doing my first landing in Canada as part of the immigration process. - Meeting the J&J Canada team for potential job openings - Finally landing in Toronto in January of 2000 and driving to Montreal to start my new job... This is where this video starts, with my nearly freezing to death on arrival in Montreal. When I left Saudi 48 hours earlier, the temperature had been a balmy 30 C. In Montreal, it was a hellish - 40 C. My system nearly shut down. In fact, I nearly passed out in the massive parking lot of J&J's East Island facility because I had such inappropriate clothing. The kindness of strangers is something that has always amazed me. A few people from the team took pity on me. François, Tineke, Marcela took me to a mall and helped me choose the right winter wear for the weather. They literally saved my life. Otherwise, I would have one day been found frozen to death in the parking lot (funny now, not funny then, I assure you). J&J Canada was the big leagues to me. - Massive factory - Massive country - Massive retailers that could make or break a new launch or brand, each one with its own demands (WalMart, LobLaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, Costco, etc.) - The amount of data available, all the way through the purchasing line to the checkout counter, and then great research budgets to find out what happened in-home - Communication and advertising development - the process, the costs, the media investments As I settled in, people kept asking me the same question (this was just a few months after 9/11)... "Why do Muslims want to kill us?" It wasn't funny & to start addressing this problematic gap, I started a blog - WWMD.com (What Would Muhammad (PBUH) Do?) to proactively start addressing the lack of knowledge about my faith and it's tenets. During all this, with perhaps the steepest learning curve of my life so far, within 6 months of reaching Montreal my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our son, Ibrahim. He was a beautiful baby, born with a cleft lip and palate, and received the best care in the world. 5 surgeries. FIVE. Each one, a challenge made slightly easier because the care in Canada was the best I could ever have dreamed of. I have only one regret about this leg of my journey. I left J&J for the wrong reason. We decided to move to the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) where most of our friends and family lived. I found a role with Novartis Consumer Health Canada in Mississauga, and moved in June 2004. Hope you are enjoying this series, please let me know in the comments. #careerpath #career #DDOA #johnsonandjohnson #JJCanada #movingtocanada #canadajob https://lnkd.in/ehVWKW8W
