Doing some "behind the scenes" charity governance work today. Working to support a small autism charity in applying for grant funding (to deliver post-diagnostic support courses for autistic adults), which is a real challenge for many charities. In this case, they need to apply to one grant funder to cover project development costs, and to a separate grant funder to cover project delivery costs. And it all takes time. And energy. And a certain amount of expertise and knowledge of how "the system" works. A real barrier for many charities. So far, I've invested about 6 hours in this, as has the key person at the charity. And we'll both be investing many more (unfunded) hours before we get anywhere near a point where the grant funding comes through #grantapplications #charitysector #governance #funding

What happens at a Family Group Conference? Most of our work involves hosting a Family Group Conference for families. We have an article on our website that explains more about what a Family Group Conference is. A Family Group Conference - or FGC - is an opportunity to bring a support network together. The group works together to create a safe plan of action to help resolve challenges. They can discuss different options and agree together what will work for them. The reason School of Hard Knocks' stats aren't 'we've reached 500,000 people this year' is because we don't believe in touching a young person's life for a day and leaving. We believe in having real, tangible impact on young people's lives. I love this charity so much because it makes a genuine long-term impact on the young people I meet and whose stories I hear. So many of these children have been through unimaginable trials and have usually experienced multiple ACEs (adverse childhood experiences), the effect of which can cause negative impact on development in childhood, harmful behaviours, social issues and health problems in adulthood. These ACEs can be negated however, and one of the key ways to do this is to give these young people consistent access to a trusted adult who can really give them the time and space they need to be heard. School of Hard Knocks' Behaviour Specialists and Facilitators work with SOHK participants every single week for up to THREE ACADEMIC YEARS and are highly skilled at getting our young people to open up. I really don't know of any other charity that offers that kind of consistent support.
