Today is National Cleanup Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of keeping our environment clean and healthy. Litter and waste not only destroy the beauty of our landscapes but also harm wildlife, pollute our waterways, and contribute to environmental degradation. By participating in cleanup efforts—whether in your local park, along a beach, or in your neighborhood—you’re helping to protect our planet for future generations. It’s not just about picking up trash; it’s about cultivating a mindset of responsibility and stewardship for our shared environment. Want to get involved? Consider organizing or joining a local cleanup event, or simply make a commitment to reducing waste in your daily life. Every small action contributes to a larger impact. Donate money, plant a tree, help the environment. Seems like an easy win right? But the problem is, there’s a huge difference between simply planting a tree and making sure that trees survive and grow over the long-term. UC Santa Cruz Environmental Studies Professor Karen Holl and a team of researchers explore just how successful tree planting campaigns for forest restorations can be with the right education. https://bit.ly/3UnUGt8
Do tree-planting campaigns follow best practices for successful forest restoration?

The Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) is a unique network that brings together plant conservationists to safeguard endangered plants across the United States, its territories, and Canada. However, their outdated website posed significant challenges. It needed proper #organization, modern features, and user-friendly tools for content management. CPC needed a complete website overhaul to serve its mission and connect with supporters. The Center for Plant Conservation’s website transformation was a resounding success. By addressing their challenges with a comprehensive #solution, we modernized their digital presence and empowered them to pursue their vital mission of plant conservation more effectively. The new website improved user engagement, streamlined operations, and secured crucial donations, ensuring that CPC can continue preserving imperiled plants for generations to come. Did anyone else spend hours as a kid collecting spare change and rolling it up in those paper coin wrappers as a donation to "save the rainforest"? I spent SO much time doing this, thinking I was making a difference. Every time I see stats on deforestation I wonder where that money went. Not that my rolls of pennies were ever going to make much of a difference.. but how could several decades of "save the rainforest" campaigns fail to reduce deforestation? And what are we doing today that will be the equivalent of rolling pennies when we look back 20 years from now? The Deforestation and Restoration Targets Tracker (beta) by World Resources Institute and Global Forest Watch is a super useful illustration of recent deforestation rates and the path to zero deforestation. We have a long (and steep) road ahead! What policies, tools, and actions will finally get us there?

9Trees CIC is a micro-charity that carries out fantastic work creating nature-rich woodlands around the UK. They've just received a Bisbes grant to plant even more trees, create more woodlands and get more people involved. But the grant only funds 80% of the costs - they're looking for help with the remaining 20%. Here's the twist - they've just under 2 months to put the full cost upfront and then wait for reimbursement during the following 4 months. This poses a challenge for this small non-profit’s cash flow. Can you help? Whether you're an organisation or an individual, every donation will make a huge impact on its work, if it's £2 or £1000. This community interest company is called 9 trees because it's the number required to balance the average UK citizen’s carbon consumption each year. Their work also create jobs in the process. 🌳✨ Let's take a trip down memory lane to our journey caring for our beloved trees. 🌱 During Phase One, we utilized a clever system of hoses to ensure each tree received the TLC it needed. With this setup, we proudly achieved a 100% success rate in tree care! 🎉 But as Phase Two kicked off towards the end of 2023, we encountered a new challenge. The area designated for tree planting lacked outlets or nearby businesses where we could connect our hoses. Talk about a dilemma! 😬 Did you know that when trees are freshly planted, they need water three times a week? Our green babies were thirsty! Cue our amazing team and volunteers brainstorming tirelessly for solutions. And guess what? We found one! 🙌 Enter: an electric golf cart equipped to carry a water tote. Huge shoutout to @stpetedistillery for generously donating the water. You rock! 🙏 Since the beginning of Phase Two, this system has been our trusty sidekick. And here's the kicker – our golf cart is now SOLAR powered! ☀️ Can you believe the innovation? We're beyond thrilled about this eco-friendly upgrade! As we venture into Phase Three, we're excited to continue using this sustainable system to nurture our trees and contribute to a greener, healthier planet. 🌍 Let's keep growing together! 💚 #TreeCare #Sustainability #InnovationInProgress #trees #stpete #volunteer

Do we like Mondays? No. Does good news make a Monday better? Yes. Two weeks ago, the Cleanup Peterborough team and 18 volunteers went along the Little Lake Shoreline to clean out trash and cigarette butts. They filled five full trash bags, a bag of clean recycling (water bottles, pop cans) and nearly 5200 cigarette butts. Yikes. All that had the potential of ending up in the lake to degrade the quality of our water, and everyone downstream. That's great work! Sure, you may skeptically say that it's going to be the same mess in another two weeks. Fair. There are people who never learn how to clean up after themselves. But with this data, the City and groups who use the land can plan ahead with extra trash receptacles and maybe some of those snazzy tamper-proof cigarette butt tower things. Yes, you can still see Dude or Dudette throwing their butts on the ground while standing right beside it. But more people may be inclined to properly dispose of their trash. Volunteering helps bring fresh new eyes to any situation. They show that there is a definite need for focus on specific issues. It's why we do what we do: bring volunteers to the agencies who need them. Because we mean it when we say #VolunteersArePriceless. 🌍 Join us in celebrating World Environment Day! 🌿 Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay, a global initiative by the United Nations to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues. For the last two years, we have sponsored the Seawilding Project to restore marine habitats, and we are very pleased to share that we are continuing for a third year in 2024. This year, we are donating an amount for each of our current employees, with a larger amount pledged for each new starter since World Environment Day 2023. Our donation will support the Seawilding Project’s goal of planting between 500 -1,000m2 of seagrass rhizome shoots into the restoration areas this year. It will also contribute to the planting of around 100,000 seagrass seeds this autumn using various methodologies including direct injection and hand scattering onto the seabed as part of key scientific trials. Seagrass can capture carbon 35 times faster than tropical rainforests and offers a natural solution to the climate crisis. With huge global declines of seagrass as a result of dredging, pollution and disease it is vital to support seagrass restoration. 🔗 Read the full article here to find out more: https://lnkd.in/eh-Wa5iT #GenerationRestoration #Lucion #ProtectingPeopleAndPlanet #WorldEnvironmentDay2024 #Seawilding #Seagrass
