Pride: Celebrating LGBTQ+ Scientists #happypridemonth Here are some things you can do to celebrate Pride and/or increase your allyship to LGBTQIA2-S communities: 📚 Learn more about LGBTQIA2-S history and lived experiences, including the stories of community leaders like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy. 🤲 Uplift the stories of LGBTQIA2-S community members around you – including your own, if you identify as part of the community and have mutually supportive and safe spaces to do so. 🌍 Learn about the importance of pronouns. Add your pronouns to your email signature, display your name on virtual platforms like MS Teams or Zoom, and business cards. 📣 If you are a direct service provider, you can practice introducing yourself with your pronouns, and ask all your clients which pronouns they use when meeting someone for the first time. This sends a powerful message that you acknowledge and respect diverse gender identities. 💻 Seek out further education about LGBTQIA2-S healthcare. There are resources within LACDMH and our broader L.A. County mental health community to help with this. The Wellbeing4LA Learning Center also has several resources to help you improve your practice with LGBTQIA2-S communities. 🌈 Use Pride-themed virtual backgrounds on MS Teams, Zoom, and other videoconferencing platforms. 🤦♀️ Recognize and challenge transphobic, biphobic, and homophobic bias and discrimination, including microaggressions in professional and personal environments.  

There are an estimated 904,000 LGBTQ+ immigrants in the United States, which means that more than one in ten LGBTQ adults are immigrants. In this webinar on 3/5 at 2pm ET, hosted by The Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity, learn how to support LGBTQ+ immigrants in their own communities, as well as ways to address the barriers they face in accessing and receiving care. https://lnkd.in/gDfr2XVW

New Resource Alert! 🔔 From the NHPCO Diversity Advisory Council (DAC) - Culturally Sensitive Communications to Enhance Care Delivery: A Resource Guide for Healthcare Professionals This guide offers linguistic considerations to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in health, hospice, and palliative care. It contains information from a multitude of NHPCO resources, such as the Hospice Through The DEI Lens report, Inclusion and Access Toolkit, Black and African American Outreach Guide, Chinese American Resource Guide, Latino Outreach Guide, and LGBTQ+ Resource Guide, as well as information from additional external research sources. The goal of the guide is to provide information, guidance, and technical expertise to all providers, especially those serving diverse communities, that will advance health equity in end-of-life care. Schools are vital in increasing student access to mental and behavioral health services. The CDC's "What Works In Schools" is an evidence-based initiative focusing on improving #HealthEducation, facilitating access to health services, and creating safe and supportive school environments. Via the CDC’s program, teachers are provided with training to address mental and behavioral health concerns and ensure inclusivity and safe spaces for minorities and LGBTQ+ youth. The result? Around 180 community members attended the unique Silver Pride festival at Kilmarnock’s Park Hotel to celebrate diversity and inclusivity. DSDC Senior Dementia Consultant, Dave Wilson-Wynne, who is also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, attended and spoke at the event. About the event, Dave says: “The event was an amazing collaborative effort, and was the first of its kind that focuses primarily on older people within the LGBTQ+ community. I spoke about the unique needs that a person living with a diagnosis of dementia might have, but also about the intersection of dementia and older people in the LGBTQ+ community. “Right now there is a generation of people who live with dementia that might find it difficult to reminiscence about the past because it can be painful. They lived through a point where it was a criminal offense to be themselves, where it was illegal to be who they are. Because of that the support we give has to be really specific. “When we look at risk factors of dementia, we see that many of them disproportionally affect people from the LGBTQ+ community. Specifically things like social isolation or depression, and the fact that, sadly, people living with dementia in the LGBTQ+ community are underrepresented in research. “What we at the DSDC and the University of Stirling hope to achieve is specific training for care partners and organisations on how we should be supporting a person that is living with dementia in the LGBTQ+ community. We hope that this training can be rolled out by the end of year. What will make this course unique is the fact that the voice of lived experience will feature heavily in the training. This means that people with dementia, in the LGBTQ+ community, will be involved in the development of this training course and the research.” Scottish Care, East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, Care Inspectorate, Age Scotland
