Mingyang Smart Energy enters a deal with Renexia Spa & the Italian Government to Set Up Shop in Italy; 18.8 MW Offshore Wind Turbines Planned for Large-Scale Mediterranean Project Renexia Spa & Mingyang Smart Energy and Minister Adolfo Urso from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will see the Chinese OEM producing wind turbines in Italy and supplying 18.8 MW wind turbines for Renexia Spa’s Med Wind floating wind farm. The agreement includes a EUR 500 million investment to establish a new company that will manage the production of wind turbines in Italy. The company will initially focus on producing key components for the Med Wind project, the largest floating offshore wind farm in the Mediterranean, according to Renexia Spa which revealed plans to use Mingyang’s 18.8 MW turbines. Renexia, the developer of Italy’s (and the Mediterranean’s) first offshore wind farm, which also features Mingyang’s technology, said it chose the Chinese wind turbine manufacturer as the company can ensure delivery by the first half of 2026. This is the time by which the developer plans to start installation work in the first phase of the four-phased 2.8 GW floating wind project. My View - Exciting times! What do you think? As we start to a new year, here is a short summary of 2023 in offshore wind industry from offshore.biz: Exciting strides in offshore wind energy: 16 MW turbine installed, 18 MW selected for a new project, and a groundbreaking 22 MW turbine announced. Models from 2022 are now a reality, installed or chosen for upcoming projects. However, the industry faces some challenges with the growing turbine sizes and calls for standardization are louder than ever. Leaders at the Offshore Energy Exhibition & Conference 2022 and 2023 emphasized the urgent need for standardization to meet 2030 deployment targets, especially with the shortage of specialized installation vessels. And there are also some good news from Norway in offshore wind industry for 2024: ‘World’s First’ Subsea Power Hub for Floating Wind to Be Tested in Norway This Subsea Collector, is a new way to transmit power from wind turbines. Interesting to see how the collaboration between wind energy and conventional energy is developing

It’s exciting to witness Wind Turbine capacities scaling up to 15 MW. There is a learning curve to each technology and over time experience helps to improve and achieve efficient operation. This scale of WTG output is worthy of being called an ‘engineering marvel’! Last week, we were having an interesting discussion with our Risk Engineering colleagues…. contrary to normal perception, just scaling up does not guarantee efficient peak performance. Each machinery needs to be engineered to perform at optimum loads equipment has to be designed for the same! With lesser no. of machines, the challenges of erecting multiple offshore units are reduced but new challenges emerge with larger and heavier equipment, especially in offshore environment. How about considering to compare downtimes and business income loss exposures… one 15 MW machine V/S 10 WTGs of 1.5 MW each. What do you think of it as an insurance underwriter?

The transition from a carbon-based energy supply to one based on electricity and hydrogen is in full swing. EnBW is investing around €2.4 billion in the construction of the He Dreiht offshore wind farm. The planned 64 wind turbines will have a total capacity of 960 megawatts and generate electricity for 1.1 million households. The entire wind farm is expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The company is investing around €13 billion in the construction of wind and solar farms alone, as well as flexibly controllable and hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants. The He Dreiht offshore wind farm will play a key role in helping EnBW achieve it's goal of becoming a carbon neutral company by 2035. As an industry that makes industry possible, the valve industry supplies important components for the wind turbines themselves and is also indispensable for the further conversion of electricity into hydrogen and vice versa.
