I recently joined a Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal (MSPBJ) 𝘿𝙀𝙄 𝙐𝙥𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 panel where we dived into the complexities and pressing issues within diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work. I was honored to join Dirk DeYoung, our moderator, and fellow panelists Ka Vang, MS, Anne Doepner, Cecilia Stanton Adams, and DAVID EDGERTON JR (DEJ) as we shared perspectives on navigating these rapidly evolving dynamics. For many of us in this space we're holding and navigating a lot: - The evolving DEI landscape - Risk of litigation weighing heavily on strategic decision-making As I shared during the panel, leading in DEI today feels deeply personal, touching on aspects of identity and community that are central to who I am. Intern Spotlight (and birthday shoutout!) for our very own Joshua Weidenfeller. When Joshua's friends ask what he does at work he says that he connects with healthcare leaders and facilitates meaningful conversations that help our team understand how we can best help our partners better understand their patients throughout their care journey. However, during lunch this summer, he found time to have some fun. One of his favorite NRC Health memories was having sandwich-eating competitions with fellow interns. Joshua thanks Business Development Manager, Dillon McKinney as one of his most impactful mentors. "Working on the type of accounts Business Development Executives work on has given me a unique perspective on how large deals come to fruition, and what it takes from a sales professional side to push the deal across the finish line." Joshua's Fun Facts: -His favorite book is Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne. -When he was younger he wanted to become a business owner, not in any specific area. -His favorite thing about going to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is how big the campus is. 3 Things My Interns Taught Me This Year: -Support Their Boundary-Setting: Notice those small moments where they work past fear of disappointing you or anyone else in order to set a boundary, and celebrate that moment! That moment may have taken so much energy to work up to, so let them know you value their effort in doing so. There are too many of us who struggle with setting boundaries, so it is always a great moment when our young people test this out. -Assume the Best: Okay, I already knew this, but I am always appreciative of those moments when you assume anyone you are working with has great intention when something does not go perfectly, and then you find out context that you were correct. We all just want to do our best! -Prioritize Space for Creative Freedom: If it were not for this, allowing my interns to have some decision-making power in how we navigate certain strategies, we would not have been able to create such meaningful connections with students on this campus. So thank you to my interns, enjoy the remainder of your summer, and I will see you in the Fall!

When you get to work with your own daughter... Sure, I've seen my daughter Chase Carpenter in action. I've seen how her smile and positive energy can draw people in. I've watched her rally groups of young women, whether it's for pure fun and community development, or it's for a purpose-driven event, meant to move the needle. She's an organized, efficient, and magnetic leader. So you may imagine my pride getting to work alongside her this past summer at The Lola. The Lola is a vibrant, women's community space where I've been co-working for the past year and a half. I've also contributed some work to The LOLA team, helping Dana Xavier Dojnik with project management processes and content marketing; starting and co-leading a weekly accountability group with Melissa Uppelschoten, now led by superstar Qiana Avery, SHRM-CP; and co-facilitating the monthly, in-person Founders & Freelancers group with the incomparable energy-shifter Kafi London. In short, being part of The LOLA community has been my jam. When The LOLA accepted Chase as an intern last spring, I knew she'd fit right in. She understood the assignment: to help support the powerful network of inclusive, female entrepreneurs and women in business who want to build a life and career in which we are constantly growing, thriving and succeeding. It's exciting to see young women realize and embrace their own power. It makes me wish I knew what they already know when I was in my 20s! But it was a different time and we were ALL different people. :) I'm excited to keep my focus on what's ahead for all of us. Because women - young, mid-life and wise - will change the world. Established women in business and emerging female leaders: if you haven't felt it yet, lean in. Timely report from Su Jin Jez and the talented folks at California Competes. Addressing gaps in work-based learning opportunities needs to be a key component of California's new Master Plan for #careereducation. Key findings: - Women were less likely than men to complete paid internships (4% vs. 9%). - White (9%) and Asian (10%) Californians completed paid internships at higher rates than their Black (5%), Latinx (4%), and Native American peers (0%). - First-generation college students were three times less likely to complete paid internships compared to continuing-generation students (4% vs. 17%). As CalCompetes observed, "These disparities can affect students’ careers prospects, and in turn, create ripple effects on their communities, the workforce, and the economy." How do you approach personal growth and continuous learning? I approach growth and personal development by acting like a sponge when I'm around others. I love learning from people's experiences and perspectives and applying their lessons to my day-to-day. 2. What's the most significant lesson you've learned thus far, and how has it impacted you? The most valuable lesson I've learned so far in my life is the importance of developing good habits, eliminating bad ones, and the value of consistency. 3. What are your top three productivity tips for a successful workday? My three productivity tips for a successful day are to schedule out my responsibilities, cut out distractions, and focus on each task individually rather than multitask. 4. As a child, what career did you want to have when you “grew up?” When I was young, I wanted to be a marine biologist because of Shark Week. 5. What is something that brings you joy?
