But before you do, here's a friendly reminder from the By-law Department at the Township of Lake of Bays: 🔥 Regulations: Fireworks are only permitted from dusk until 11:00 p.m. during statutory holiday weekends and Canada Day provided there is no fire ban. Check the Fire Danger Rating before discharging (currently set to MODERATE). 🐾 Pets and Wildlife: Remember, not all creatures enjoy the show. Create a calm indoor space for your furry friends and consider giving your neighbors with pets a heads up. 🦺 Safety First: When handling fireworks, safety is key. Find an open area, away from flammables, keep water nearby, and never let children handle fireworks. 🚨 Reporting: See a violation? Report it through our By-law Complaint Portal. Outdoor holiday decorations are one of the best parts of this time of year! However, decorations on trees and shrubbery can be harmful if not done correctly. Here are a few tips for HOAs to ensure safe practices in your community: - Never use indoor holiday lights outdoors. They aren't made to handle the elements and can burn trees if they malfunction due to weather. - Use weatherproof extension cords to prevent the risk of fire. - Check the condition of your outdoor lights, extension cords, and lightboxes. Don't use any lights or cords with exposed/frayed wires. - Don't use a staple gun on trees.

Fireworks and birds Hello everybody! In my latest video I will speak about a very timely issue: the impact of fireworks on birds. This has been examined before, of course. Birds will flee when confronted with fireworks. The publication presented here (Hoekstra et al., (2023) Fireworks disturbance across bird communities. Front Ecol Environ 2023; doi:10.1002/fee.2694) primarily addressed the extent to which this occurs. How did they measure the number of fleeing birds? The authors used RADAR-data produced for monitoring rain or snow. Flying birds are visible on RADAR as well. The data analzyed were taken from the Netherlands which is an ideal location for research like this. First reason: people from the Netherlands apparently love fireworks. While constituting 3.8 % of the EU population, they are responsible for 22 % of all imports of fireworks. Second reason: The Netherlands are densely populated and, at the same time, host a large populations of birds, in particular overwintering migratory birds like geese. Now that Memorial Day has passed, the traffic on local lakes will increase. Remember to be aware of the weather conditions before departing, Avoid drinking alcohol while operating a boat (it's not only unsafe it's illegal), and check to make sure you have the proper number and size of life jackets for everyone prior to leaving the dock and always use safe speeds. #safetyfirst #safety #safetytips #boatingsafety #SinglePoint

As we get ready to celebrate Independence Day, many of us plan to attend firework shows, have a backyard picnic, or enjoy a day at the beach.
