Welcome to small US city of #Townsend, Tennessee. It advertises itself as the “Quiet Side of the #Smokies” (aka the Great Smoky Mountains National Park), but it’s really the bike-friendly side. That’s smart, as this is the closest town to the park’s Cades Cove area. Cades Cove has a scenic loop road that the National Park Service closes to motorists every Wednesday in the summer. So, many people who stay here planning to #bike in Cades Cove end up #cycling to shopping and dining in Townsend, as well. Cycling can benefit #cities large and small. https://lnkd.in/ecmha-Gg

The recent publication of the National Transport Authority’s Walking and Cycling Index which was expanded to include the Waterford Metropolitan Area for the first time finds that 52% of adults in the Waterford Metropolitan Area walk or wheel at least five times a week, however participation in cycling was lower with 16% of residents cycling at least once a week. When asked what would help them walk or wheel more, Waterford Metropolitan Area residents want better footpath surfaces including dropped kerbs at crossing points, more parks and green spaces close to home, and nicer places along streets to stop and rest. When asked what would help them cycle more, residents wanted infrastructural improvements such as traffic-free paths through parks or greenways, signed cycle routes along quieter streets, and cycle tracks along roads physically separated from traffic and pedestrians. https://lnkd.in/eSt8KUVQ

Would you feel safe cycling down this bike lane in Florida? The design of our streets, and cities as a whole, influences how we choose to get around. An unprotected bike lane sandwiched between multiple lanes of traffic fails to promote cycling as a safe and viable alternative. When it comes to safety, the bare minimum shouldn't cut it anymore. https://lnkd.in/ea8rfubD #urbanplanning

Think sidewalks are safer for cycling? Think again. 🚲 It might feel safer to ride on the sidewalk, but studies show it's actually more dangerous due to visibility issues and increased collisions. That is why New York has made sidewalk cycling illegal. Riding on the street, where drivers expect to see you, is safer and legal. Here are a few key cycling rules to keep in mind: -Always ride in the same direction as traffic. 🚗➡️🚴♂️ -Use bike lanes when available, but if they're blocked, it's legal to ride in the regular traffic lane. 🚴♂️🚧 -Follow traffic signals and signs – bikes must stop at red lights too! 🚦🛑 -Wear a helmet if you're under 14; it's strongly recommended for everyone else. 🪖💡 -Equip your bike with a white headlight, red taillight, and reflectors for night riding. 🌃🔦 Respecting these laws helps keep everyone safe! 🚴♂️ Race Across America: The Ultimate Cycling Challenge 🇺🇸 The Race Across America is an awe-inspiring ultra-distance road cycling race that spans the entire United States. Imagine covering 4,800 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, California, to the Atlantic Ocean in Annapolis, Maryland, all within 12 days or less. It's a grueling test of endurance, determination, and mental fortitude. Solo riders face the ultimate battle against fatigue, sleep deprivation, and extreme weather conditions. Cyclists must ride 18 to 20 hours per day, covering approximately 275 miles daily. The fastest solo record stands at seven days, 15 hours, and 56 minutes! Teams also compete, allowing riders to balance speed and rest. The journey starts in sunny San Diego, traverses the scorching Arizona desert, climbs through the majestic Colorado Rockies, battles Midwest winds, and finally conquers the Appalachian Mountains. Riders endure temperatures exceeding 100°F in the Southwest desert, mountain passes over 10,000 feet (3,050 meters), Midwest thunderstorms, and southern humidity. The wind, especially across the vast American heartland, can make or break their race. In 2021, Vernon cyclist Leah Goldstein made history by becoming the first woman to win RAAM. She completed the grueling course in 11 days 3 hours 3 minutes, overcoming physical and mental challenges. RAAM isn't just a race; it's a testament to human resilience, teamwork, and the pursuit of extraordinary goals. 🌟 As we celebrate the indomitable spirit of cyclists like Leah Goldstein, let's remember that life's greatest achievements often lie beyond our comfort zones. 🏁 #RaceAcrossAmerica #CyclingChallenge #EnduranceRiding #Inspiration

Recently, I had the opportunity to see the cycling infrastructure along the seafront in Southend-on-Sea. Among the products being used are the sleek and functional Mini-Ensign Bollards from Glasdon. The Mini-Ensign is a slimline bollard designed to carry signage for cycle routes, directional arrows, and other wayfinding information. As I watched cyclists peddle by, I could see how effectively these bollards delineate the dedicated cycle lanes. Their compact size and clear signing make them perfect for carriageway cycling initiatives aimed at improving safety and promoting active transportation. It's exciting to see Councils investing in this type of infrastructure to encourage cycling as a convenient, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to get around. Products like the Mini-Ensign Bollard are playing an important role in making our streets more cycle-friendly. Have you noticed any new cycling infrastructure going up in your area recently?
