Last spring, UD pre-veterinary medicine major Skyler Rowe broadened her horizons by studying at University College Dublin. There, she immersed herself in courses on animal science and veterinary medicine, gaining hands-on experience in European veterinary practices. Embracing the challenge of living in a new country, she gained independence, confidence, and a global network of friends. With Black Americans making up only 8% of the science and engineering workforce (NSF, 2021), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) provides crucial representation and support for Black engineering students. NSBE's mission is to increase "the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community." Since its founding in 1974, NSBE has grown to over 24,000 active members. Led by proactive student leaders in partnership with Dean Levi Thompson, the UD chapter, one of over 600 nationwide, supports this mission by hosting meetings with industry professionals, offering leadership roles through its executive board, and sending members to national conferences. As the 2024 Summer Olympics light up Paris, the University of Delaware is proud to highlight its cutting-edge expertise in human performance, sports sciences, and innovative research. Soccer, or football as it’s known globally, is one of the most popular Olympic sports. Thomas Kaminski, a professor of kinesiology and applied physiology in UD's College of Health Sciences, is a renowned expert on soccer concussions and the sole U.S. representative on the FIFA Heading Expert Group. “FIFA is concerned about the disparity in concussions between men and women,” Kaminski said. “Women are at a higher risk of concussion due to factors like neck and overall body strength.” https://ow.ly/Sv1P50SLwcG

UD’s Poison Book Project was the subject of a feature in The Washington Post. The interdisciplinary research initiative at UD and Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library aims to identify books still in circulation that had been produced using toxic pigments common in Victorian bookbinding. For two weeks this summer, the STEMSisters, 27 Pakistani collegiate women, experienced UD’s campus as Blue Hens. They explored Delaware’s Winterthur and Bowers Beach, visited the United Nations in NYC, and spent their final week in Washington, D.C. The program, co-hosted by UD's College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and the American Institute of Pakistan Studies, aims to inspire women in STEM while focusing on climate change and sustainability.
