I've written an article reviewing some of the literature for those of us working in child and adolescent mental health - on the topic of why we work with parents/caregivers. Feel free to read/share if helpful. I have also attached a link to a parent/caregiver version of this article in case you would like to provide it to parents, for them to understand why we (mostly) want to involve in their child/adolescent's mental health treatment. https://lnkd.in/gYhPP_VY

Important point. Our first mistake is often that the initial step in "engaging" families with children in need of mental health services is a standard screening administered by someone who will not provide therapy. Kids and families need to build trust with the provider first and foremost. #familyengagement. Check out our book on engaging families of young children in #mentalhealth services -- including a chapter on equitable family engagement. https://lnkd.in/eRBrZqRh

Are therapists replacing parents? Child-rearing seems to be the latest job Americans are outsourcing. A new book critiques the delegation of parental authority to therapists, teachers, and psychiatric culture. Abigail Shrier's "Bad Therapy" exposes an unsettling trend: Gen Z's increased dependence on therapy has led not to better mental health –but a diminished capacity for self-reliance. The infiltration of therapeutic methods into education exacerbates the problem. Shrier criticizes the proliferation of mental health surveys in schools. Counterintuitively, they're normalizing – and potentially encouraging – harmful thoughts among students. The book is a crucial reminder of the irreplaceable role of parents in guiding and protecting their children. It is absolutely time for parents to reclaim their rightful place in their children's lives. Jump into the comments for the full story. ⬇️ #parentingadvice #mentalhealth #therapy
