The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration is turning to artificial intelligence in hopes of catching wildfires right as they start. The Next Generation Fire System uses #AI to scan satellite imagery. The system can identify wildfires as small as one acre in size. https://lnkd.in/dNjddQwz

📍New Paths in Tornado Detection with AI📍 TorNet, a new AI dataset developed by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, could revolutionize the detection and prediction of tornadoes, enhancing meteorologists' ability to issue warnings. It contains radar data from thousands of tornadoes in the USA over the past 10 years, as well as information about storms that did not produce tornadoes. TorNet, available as open-source software, includes over 200,000 radar images, of which 13,587 depict tornadoes. Researchers used AI and developed a deep learning model that outperforms previous algorithms, correctly classifying 50% of weaker EF-1 tornadoes and over 85% of EF-2 or stronger tornadoes, where classical methods generate only 30% of correct tornado alerts. AI can help better understand the processes leading to tornado formation, improving meteorologist training and forecast accuracy. TorNet has the potential to enhance the precision of tornado warnings, reducing the number of false alarms and building public trust. This is all made possible by solutions such as deep learning technology, which is also used in developing AI within PRO.display, our system used to control shelf displays. https://bit.ly/3K8N7QI #TornadoDetection #WeatherTech #Meteorology

#GeoAI News: A new study in Nature by Global Fishing Watch (GFW) has exposed the enormous scale of untracked human activity at sea, or "dark fleets," using geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI). Researchers found that 75 percent of the world's industrial fishing vessels aren't being publicly tracked, with almost a third of transport and energy vessel activity missing from public tracking systems. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the primary tool to track vessels through radio activity, however, it's easy for ships to stay off the grid. To get a clearer picture, AI was used to scan 2,000 terabytes of satellite data from the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite constellation, which was then combined with GPS data to highlight otherwise undetected or overlooked ships. A machine learning program then analyzed the massive information sets to pinpoint undocumented fishing vessels. GFW's director said the study marks “the beginning of a new era in ocean management and transparency.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dBUYFUeu This update is featured in today's DailyGeo: https://lnkd.in/g-SkHDEv #geography #geoAI #AI #gis #mapping #maps #geographicinformationsystems #gps #tech #satelliteimagery #satellite #oceanography #oceans #fishing #fishingindustry #sattech

I've recently gone on a deep dive into how to efficiently build massive-scale harmonized earth-observation data cubes using open data. These workflows are common at big satellite data providers and processors (think NASA, Planet, etc.) But thanks to open data and serverless cloud computing, it's now feasible for teams of all sizes to build their own customized data cubes for Earth analytics and AI. Come join this webinar--the first of many Earthmover educational events--to learn how to do it yourself!

Glacier in Greenland 🛰️ We've all heard how glaciers move, but what does that actually look like? Let's take a look at the Ilulissat Glacier in Greenland 🇬🇱. The glacier is on the right, and is moving into the fjord in the center and left parts of the images. The colors have been optimized for visualizing the glacier movements, and the blue dots are AI tracking of the trajectory, which can also be used for estimating the velocity. These technologies can be highly useful when monitoring the situation in the Arctic, where the effects of climate change are most severe. All imagery is from the ESA Sentinel-2 satellite, from March through August 2022. #atlaai #esa #geospatial #mapping #gis #ESABICDenmark

In some parts of the world, wildfire season is becoming longer and more dangerous as a result of climate change. In fact, "Wildfire is year-round for much of the United States," ushering in the concept of a "fire year," according to the US Department of Agriculture. That's why NASA is using its wealth of Earth observation data to help fire management agencies predict and put out wildfires throughout the country. It's also using machine learning to create predictive models of how wildfires could spread and what the resulting damage might be. These projections can help firefighters efficiently delegate their resources during emergencies. In addition, NASA is developing technology to help responders safely use drones to tackle fires and conduct prescribed burns. Thank you to the folks at NASA Ames Research Center for speaking with me for this piece! #NASA #climatechange #wildfires #machinelearning CNET https://lnkd.in/gTYWBv83
