Today, I'm reading John F Kennedy's Profiles in Courage, a book about US Senators "whose abiding loyalty to their nation, triumphed over all personal and political considerations." I find it inspiring, that these Senators had the courage to make decisions best for the nation, even when it is unpopular, against their party line, and destroys their re-election chances. It takes courage to be a politican. It takes courage to run in your first election, it takes courage to withstand attacks on controversial topics, it takes courage to legislate good policy for the nation's future. I'm so inspired by Cornellian politicans, Cornellians are such great politicians!! Ezra Cornell was a politician, AD White as well!! Cornell's new Brooks Policy School is the best policy school in the whole world, and the Cornell in Washington program has Cornell students interning in all the top legislatures, agencies, and NGOs! I really hope a Cornellian becomes President of America one day!! a courageous quote from the book: "I shall stand by the Union with absolute disregard of personal consequences. What are personal consequences in comparison with the good or evil which may befall a great country in a crisis like this? Let the consequences be what they will, I am careless. The net-net is the change from Biden to Harris has reset the race and we have an upcoming sprint to Election Day that will kick-off around Labor Day - - as much as the campaigns WANT to be engaged with voters, the American electorate won’t be fully ready for the campaign until after the Olympics conclude, the Dem convention has occured, and summer is officially over (aka, kids back in school). A note about Gov Tim Walz as the VP - - the choice by Harris won’t change the results in Penn’s deck. Despite the hype, it’s been more than 40 years since a VP choice actually made a difference in the electoral map. In rare occasions, they can make a difference with some constituencies, PROVIDED those groups are bold enough to sit out or go somewhere else (see Mike Pence in 2016). Generational shifts have been a mixed bag - - Quayle worked in 1988, but Palin (2008) and Ryan (2012) fell short (arguably Gore doesn’t fit here as Clinton was himself generational). For nearly half of the last 50 years, it’s been the senior statesman (HW Bush, Cheney, Biden) that’s held the role AND been re-elected. Once the smoke of the VP pick is over this week, the race remains in the same place: Pennsylvania is the core battleground and kitchen table economics is the top issue.
