The The R&A's recently released Global Golf Participation Report estimates that there are over 61 million active players globally (excluding the US & Mexico). The top two take aways we found: 📈 At almost 40 million, the number of 9 and 18 hole golfers has seen a 36% increase in the last 10 years. ⛳ Off the course, 35% of participants engage sport exclusively through alternative formats including simulators, driving ranges and adventure golf. ✍ Our view: Participation is not just a leading indicator of the health of a sport but also of future fandom and commercial value. This is because fan base size is closely correlated with Intellectual Property (IP) value. As an example, in the UK, people who play golf are 7x more likely to be a committed fan of The Open Championship. #participation #sportsfans #sportsdata

Calling all swingers 🏌♀️ it's the taking part that counts... In the latest Global Golf Participation Report by The R&A its estimated that there are over 61 million active players globally (excluding the US & Mexico). The top two take aways from the report: 📈 there's been a 36% increase in the number of 9 and 18 hole golfers in the last 10 years ⛳ Where you're more likely to find me...off the course, 35% of participants engage exclusively through alternative formats including simulators, driving ranges and adventure golf. Participation is still a leading indicator for the health of a sport, the direction of future fandom and commercial value, (with fan base size closely correlating with Intellectual Property (IP) value). For example, in the UK, people who play golf are 7x more likely to be a committed fan of The Open Championship. #fanengagement #sports #participation

“Another record breaking year for golf in England” Yep, according to this latest report by England Golf, the number of rounds posted on the World Handicap system is 8.51 million in the first 10 months of the year! This is a 460,000 increase from the whole of 2022 🙌 📈 And this doesn’t include all the casual rounds played by millions of golfers each year… Shows that golf is in a great place and the numbers keep increasing = busier clubhouses and all round great for the sport 😀 Link to article from Golf Business News in the comments below 👇 #golf #participation #golfnews #marketing #sportsbusiness #golfindustry

The groups that run golf say that a new rule change that will shorten the distance balls move is "fair" and won't have a big effect on casual players. Before, the R&A and USGA came up with the idea of a Model Local Rule (MLR) that would let elite tournaments choose to use balls that move about 15 yards less. #Golf #Golfmanagers #R&A #Sports
Golf managers support a rule change that will make the ball move less far.

How good are "scratch golfers" actually? Probably not what you think. (tournament season recap below) As some of you know I enjoy/get a thrill out of playing some competitive golf in the summer and I thought this would be an interesting post for those interested in golf as I looked at my tournament rounds this year. This summer I got to play in 10 tournament rounds between May-September, the results are below. These are all individual stroke play events where, yes, you had to putt everything out and ob was ob, and no Michael S. Sheppard, "breakfast balls" were allowed, etc.... I will preface this by saying my handicap index was between a 0.4 and a +1.5 this year and that this is a small 1 person sample size. That said, I feel it is a good representation of how most "scratch players" play in tournaments. US Open Local Q 82 T39/72 Badgerland Invite 75-82 T22/57 WSGA Match Play Q 70 1/54 :) WSGA Match Play, finished 1-2 in pool play did not make rd of 16 WSGA State AM Q. 77. 19/83 (Did not Q) State Open Q (Irish Course) 77 T18/84 (Did not Q) State Open Last Ch Q. 83 T61/78 (Did not Q) US Mid Am Q. 79 T34/68 (Did not Q) WSGA 36 Hole 75-76 26/53 WSGA MidAM (Stevens Pt) 73 T7/120 Scoring Average: 77.5 (low 70, high 83) Takeaways 1. Tournaments are much different than regular golf. Putting everything out, playing with the nerves of a "meaningful round", tougher pins, tees, etc... My scoring average on the GHIN app is 74 (low 68, high 82). Which means in tournaments my scoring av is over 3.5 shots higher. 2. There are levels- There is a book called "Paper Tiger" that says "scratch is shit" and explains the levels of good golfers. There is a large gap between scratch players and +3/+4 handicap players (referred to as 'stud amateurs'), and an even bigger gap between +3/+4 players and mini tour pros and another big gap between mini tour pros and the guys on TV every week. To put it simply pros are really, really good. 3. Golf is best played at 80%, at least for me. When I am swinging at 80% and giving 80% effort is when I play and score my best. In a lot of the qualifiers above I wanted to get through badly and was mentally trying at 110%. This is counter productive in golf. It made be amp'd up and tight and I made some steery swings under pressure or got pissed off after bad shots, that never helps. 4. I did make progress this year and don't feel very far off from being better. It was cool to win something and get a medal (for the first time in 17 years) even if it was a qualifier and nice to have a solid finish in the last event- especially after missing the Am and Open. That's all I've got, look forward to getting back out there in 8 months #golf
