The information that is shared so consistently at all levels - individual, local, regional, national, international - about the experiences and wellbeing of autistic children and young people who find it so difficult to manage the expectations/environments and reach their potential in our education system is distressing. But every single person involved in our education system, whatever their role, can do something to make a positive difference. And as August unfolds and will inevitably run into September and the start of a new academic year, now is a good time to reflect on this. Have a look at the Autism Education Trust (AET) website and join those who absolutely understand that autism is a difference not a deficit and use the AET materials, programmes and support - some free to access - to make a tangible difference to those accessing education and enable them to access an education that supports their wellbeing and outcomes. “Pupil voice has changed practice. Pupils are better able to self-advocate because they know they will be heard." - Kent School. The Autism Education Trust (AET) training and frameworks are built around eight key principles. Principle Two is "enabling the voice of the autistic child and young person to contribute to and influence decisions". The training encourages staff to talk to autistic pupils about what they would like to be put in place to support them. Learning life skills/independent living skills is essential to increasing independence in the home and community. Learning these skills early on allows people with autism to achieve their full potential and successfully transition into adulthood.

Children progress and learn to communicate at different rates. For some children, communication can be an unexpected hurdle that requires special attention. Developmental setbacks, learning disabilities, and autism can contribute to delayed speech development for children. We are implementing Autism Education Trust training in schools across Kent to improve support for autistic children and young people. Over 400 education settings have accessed the training since September 2023. “The training was so useful, giving a more modern overview on autism.
