National Association for Regional Councils (NARC) Conference - Day 3 -2/13/24 I'm here in Washington DC getting knowledge and making connections to address the issues our region is concerned with, such as affordable housing. Today's meetings and sessions were thought-provoking, starting with a session on the challenges of affordable housing, connected to the housing supply. Commissioner from Naco reminded us all, "Be open to a changing environment and be a catalyst to that change." Director Jason Jordan encouraged, "Make investments in people by making investments in infrastructure." We received printed and online resources to help in these endeavors. Affordable housing and workforce housing are getting more difficult due to rising costs, whether from needed zoning reform, cost of construction, and cost of land. But we can address the things we control, like regulatory zoning and outdated zoning codes, etc. Later, we heard from Urban Forestry, which covered opportunities for federal support for a greener and healthier environment. Plus, in our roundtables, connected with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the numerous grant opportunities our localities, whether municipal, school district, or in partnerships with non profits can take advantage of. Collaboration is key. Finally ended with the NARC Board Meeting saying farewell to outgoing ED and incoming while accomplishing plans for upcoming changes and conferences. "Building Community Together!" #YourVoiceMatters #YourVoteMatters #votepurple https://lnkd.in/g7PzFWbW

Being a summer camp counselor set me up for LIFE, but HOW exactly? Be Flexible Things rarely go exactly how you plan when dealing with 100+ kids and dozens of daily activities. Being able to entertain through different methods on the fly with limited supplies is an art. Energy Matters It’s only a bad day if you let it be, and kids pick up on your energy like a bloodhound. If you aren’t excited about what is next, why should they be? Making a glass-half-full perspective your default spills over into every other aspect of your life. Faith (in myself) Without realizing it, you’re leading groups of people and making automatic decisions based on information and instinct. In this process, you build trust with both others and yourself. I could go on for ages, but you get the idea—those summer experiences manifested into skills I now carry in my personal and professional life. P.S., if you’re a former camp counselor, you know how easy it is to spot another in the wild! Happy 4th, everyone!! Since I moved to the Inland Northwest 2 years ago, I’ve been deep diving into the history, people, talents, and resources of our region. One of the common themes that comes up is this: we have so many hidden gems in the Inland Northwest. So many incredible businesses, people, nonprofits, natural resources, educational institutions, big thinkers, innovators. And yet we struggle to understand what it means to be an Inland Northwesterner. Who are we? What even are the boundaries of the Inland Northwest? If you look on Wikipedia, the very boundaries of the Inland Northwest are up for debate. Did you know that Spokane Falls Community College hosts the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy, a top-tier culinary school with a 100% job placement rate for their graduates? Did you know that Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) and URM Stores Inc were both founded and operate in the INW and generate BILLIONS of dollars in revenue every year? Did you know that Eastern Washington University’s Institute for Public Policy and Economic Analysis, spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Jones, established a Community Indicators Database in 2004 and now tracks and maintains data on key community indicators for NINE different counties in Washington? We have a wealth of resources at our finger tips, and yet we struggle to form a regional identity and celebrate all that makes us unique and powerful. I don’t have all the solutions, but I do have some ideas that I’m looking forward to continue sharing with all of you as I gather more stories, insights, and wisdom from this incredible region. #inlandnw #communitybuilding #connectionmatters #communityidentity

Important Update: Noble County Parks Fall Summit Postponed After careful consideration, we’ve decided to postpone the Noble County Parks Fall Summit to spring 2025. This will allow us to ensure a more successful event for everyone involved! Reasons for the change: Key panelists from local parks departments are unavailable. We’ve received fewer RSVPs than usual. Scheduling conflicts are impacting our planning. We’re excited about the opportunity to make the spring summit even better! Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for your understanding. #NobleCountyParks #Update
