Truth and Reconciliation Day: Reflecting on the Path Forward 🕊️ On September 30, we come together to commemorate Truth and Reconciliation Day, a time to honor the memory of the children who never returned from residential schools and to acknowledge the resilience of Survivors, their families, and communities. This day serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact of residential schools on Indigenous peoples and the urgent need for healing and reconciliation. It's a day to listen, learn, and understand the painful history and ongoing consequences of these institutions. As we wear our orange shirts in solidarity, we recognize the importance of raising awareness about the intergenerational effects of residential schools and the principle that 'Every Child Matters.' Let the orange shirt symbolize our commitment to restoring culture, freedom, and self-esteem to Indigenous children. Truth and Reconciliation Day is a crucial step on the path toward a more just and inclusive society. Let us come together to bridge the gaps of understanding, support Indigenous voices, and work towards a future where reconciliation is not just a concept but a lived reality. 🧡🤝 #TruthAndReconciliation #EveryChildMatters"

“Reconciliation requires sustained action” This day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. For non-Indigenous groups, reconciliation starts with listening. With self-reflection. Acknowledging personal gaps in knowledge and entering into partnerships with Indigenous peoples with humility and respect. Most importantly reconciliation requires taking sustained action. Reconciliation cannot be a one-time effort. It must be deep and ongoing. As a company that operates on the sacred lands of local indigenous people, we are committed to reconciliation through sustained action. This is facilitated through building meaningful connections and sustainable relationships and partnerships with our indigenous communities. If you have not already, take a moment and think about what reconciliation means you and your organizations, and take action towards healing by building those meaningful connections, relationships and partnerships with our indigenous communities. It is only as a truly united front, progressing in solidarity, that we will move the needle towards true reconciliation. #TruthandReconciliation, #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters

"What happened here...belongs to all Canadians" "My truth is your truth" "If you show me your heart, I will show you my heart" Sturgeon Lake First Nation Elder and Residential School Survivor Joseph Naytowhow shares these powerful words in the short video clip below. Hiy hiy Joseph for sharing this wisdom and medicine as we prepare to honour the 10th anniversary of #OrangeShirtDay #OSD. My life has taken me to places where I am deeply honoured, and also shattered to hear so many first-hand accounts from Survivors. About the terrible abuse, neglect, and actual torture they experienced as children. To me, every Survivor who is at a place in their healing where they are able to share any part of their story is a miracle when you think about everything they have overcome. Survivors share their stories at great personal cost - can you imagine living and re-living such terrifying memories and experiences? I have heard many reasons from Survivors for sharing their stories - from personal healing for them and their families, to honouring the children who were taken to school and never returned home to their families, to ensuring that no child is ever treated like that again in Canada - as part of a state- and church-sponsored system of abuse. My feeling is that we would be a lot further ahead as Canadians in Truth and Reconciliation if we took the time to listen and learn more from Survivors. To really hear the stories and empathize with what that must have been like for them as little children. What a heavy burden that has been for Survivors to bear. How it has impacted everyone in the communities through generations to today. And how, as a society, we are not approaching #TruthandReconciliation with the urgency and respect it deserves. In honour of #NDTR and in a spirit of Reconcili-Action, would you consider renting the video of Phyllis Webstad, Residential School Survivor and co-creator of Orange Shirt Day to hear her story? You can watch the video with your loved ones, friends and colleagues. https://osd.iisb.ca/ #countmein #10for10
