🇳🇱 Brand discounter Nettorama performs strong results Nettorama (privately owned by Bastmeijer family) has had a great year in 2022. Both turnover and profit rose sharply, Quote reports. Nettorama achives €58 million more turnover than a year earlier. Nettorama posted a turnover of €410 million in 2022. This is reported by Quote on basis of annual reports filed with the Chamber of Commerce. Of that €410 million, about a quarter remained as gross profit. That turnover of €410 million for 2022 is considerably higher than the €352 million achieved by Nettorama in 2021. Profit also rose sharply, by almost €3 million. 'And that with only 32 supermarkets', Quote notes with some surprise. Almost €760,000 is made in profit per location, a calculation shows. The total profit was paid in its entirety as dividend to (Jaap) Bastmeijer, according to Quote. Quote states that it has high expectations for the coming years and that it follows Nettorama with suspicion. 51 stores converted from the Boni formula to Nettorama. As a result, the total grows to 83 supermarkets. Müller UK & Ireland announced the strategic sale of Milk and More , a leading dairy delivery company, to rival milk processor Freshways Group, a mid-market player. This undisclosed transaction is expected to be completed on January 1, 2024. Milk & More, a market leader in home grocery deliveries with approximately 1,100 employees and 31 depots, was originally acquired by Müller in 2016 as part of a larger deal with Dairy Crest. The decision to sell Milk & More aligns with Müller's strategic shift towards intensifying its focus on business-to-business (B2B) operations rather than direct-to-consumer sales. This move reflects Müller's commitment to optimizing its business portfolio and adapting to evolving market dynamics. Freshways Group, will acquire all 31 Milk & More sites, including its e-commerce operation, with the transfer of all 1,100 staff members. Milk & More has been a key player in delivering fresh goods to customers across the country. Despite its successful transformation under Müller's ownership, the strategic review led to the conclusion that it no longer fits Müller's primary focus as a B2B supplier. Freshways MD Bali Nijjar shared plans to operate Milk & More as a standalone business, separate from Freshways' existing operations. Woolworths spun off a $9 billion business after executing the perfect combination of investment strategies. They used two common strategies to quickly control the market and build a strong moat: - Horizontal investments to roll up market share - Vertical investment strategy to build the moat 🔄 Roll Up Market Share Dan Murphys was the first acquisition. They only had 5 stores but the goal was clear - gain market share through discount prices. Dans had huge growth but Woolworths realised that people would pay a premium to get their alcohol where they get their groceries. So they opened BWS stores right next door to Woolworths. As consumers became more interested in unique and high-quality wines, Woolworths looked to Cellarmasters. The involvement of experts in selecting the wines attracted wine enthusiasts that BWS and Dans couldn't. They now have the market covered, discount prices, convenience and quality customer service. 🏰 Build The Moat In an effort to provide an offering others couldn't, they acquired wine brands and on demand delivery providers. Paragon Wine Estates is a growing collection of premium wine brands that Endeavour has acquired and you can't get them anywhere else. As people increasingly used on-demand delivery apps, Endeavour saw the opportunity to control this distribution channel through JimmyBrings & Shorty's. They now have wines you can't get anywhere else with a distribution channel that's unmatched. Rohlik Group Secures $170M in funding to expand European operations and sell Innovative Tech Solutions. Rohlik, a Czech grocery delivery company, has announced a new funding round of $170 million, aimed at expanding its reach across Europe and enhancing its technology offerings. The funding round, led by he European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), alongside existing investors Sofina, Index Ventures, Quadrille Capital, and TCF Capital and complemented by growth capital funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) under its Scale-Up Initiative, signifies Rohlik's continued growth and its plans to enter 10 new cities over the next six years. Known for its focus on local producers and a vast array of products, Rohlik differentiates itself by operating smaller, strategically located warehouses and partnering closely with local butchers, fishmongers, and other vendors. This approach not only supports local economies but also provides customers with fresh, high-quality options. Additionally, Rohlik is set to launch a technology platform licensing initiative later this year. This platform will offer logistics, analytics software, and robotics solutions to other delivery companies, allowing them to utilize Rohlik’s established infrastructure to optimize their own operations.
