Twenty years ago we had a personality hire. She organized things, went cube to cube chatting folks up and she’d always have time to bake stuff from scratch. No one knew what she did, what LOB she worked for, or who her boss was. I always called that "SVP’s grandma". She survived every single wave of bank layoffs and no one asked her to do a darn thing. Not gonna mention her name but if she’s still alive she knows who she is…💀

Personality hires often get the most attention from management and apparently find themselves promoted to management as well. I remember a fellow colleague who never had a single sales award that was promoted to management due to her skill in Salesforce. So management got what they wanted but lost the respect of the hard working over achievers within the company.

Today's WSJ Tuesday June 25, 2024 - Vol. CCLXXXIII No. 147 Pg A2 "Justices to Weigh Gender-Transition Care Ban" ONE of my college degrees PreMed (Embryology/Physiology/Neurology/Genetics etc) AND WHY are NO ONE'S EVER mentioning at ALL that the neurological connections for cognitive reasoning are NOT fully connected in XY until age 23 +/- 21 for XX +/- which MEANS a CHILD does NOT have mental capacity ESP PRE-PUBERTY to determine HE/SHE wants to be a "boy" or "a girl". Makes me furious. SO furious. Why is there so much information control in this new agenda? But WORSE this is child ABUSE and MOLESTATION and "I" am "qualified" to make this claim - oh, but wait - the ole "follow the money" recall the audience member secretly recording a presentation to Vanderbilt presenter explaining ALL THE MONEY they can make billing for the surgeries, the psychological consults, the prescribing & follow up visits = this country/ our politicians our healthcare system all drunk with following the money- "PLEASE" become aware and involved. Thank you.

I wasn't a personality hire, but I became one, and only partly by design. Having style and panache is what separates you from the rest, but you have to make something of it, otherwise you will be known for the personality and nothing else. A co-worker of mine was famous for telling stories, but the difference between us was that he talked of his past, while I focused on our present and the future.

Personality hires in my experience in my industry have been done at levels that cause a lot of issues and led to unethical behavior being tolerated, creating intolerable work environments. At one point one of them was under the influence without entire team and said they never cared if anyone was ever qualified, only if they liked the person. They then said ambitious people were a huge turn off using a quote from my 5 year personal Development plan we’d discussed privatley. If someone had the majority of the skills and they have a better personality and the team can cover the skills gap, that’s the only situation where a personality hire could be considered.

"Personality hire" sounds like something that's possible in a GOOD economy where companies can afford to do frivolous things. On the flip side, being a "personality hire" may be a great way to save one's job from AI since it's unlikely AI is not going to ever have the ability to compete at that level.

The concept of a 'personality hire' highlights the value of soft skills in the workplace. While charisma can create a positive work culture, it's essential to balance it with tangible contributions. On AI, it's clear that many leaders are still grappling with the technology's potential, as shown by the 61% of C-suite executives who see it as a game-changer but lack confidence in their team's AI knowledge. Lastly, finding the sweet spot in hybrid work can significantly enhance productivity and employee satisfaction.
