Geopolitical and technology trends have long pointed towards the inevitable US banning of TikTok, which was a core thesis for my investing in Meta late 2022. In this week's article I discuss the prospect and implications of the likely ban: https://lnkd.in/gSFdYwcU Last week I wrote about whether or not Google today is the Meta of late 2022. This week showed Apple commit to using Google's AI models in some capacity, and proved that Google has a lot more life in it than many market commentators give it credit for: https://lnkd.in/g4gnjVFH

Big tech needs to touch grass once in a while. Yesterday I made a post about Meta getting their AI use case wrong, today I read about Google advertising Gemini as a tool for kids to write letters to their Olympic heroes. I think big tech's obsession with forcing AI use cases everywhere (because they've all committed to over-investing) is now beginning to sound out-of-touch. There are certain facets of life and work where users/consumers/clients will always prefer a real human's work - because, as hard as that might be to believe in a world of chatbots, human input is precisely what constitutes the entire value of so many things, especially parasocial relationships.

When a #socialmedia #algorithm degrades the #quality of the #content it surfaces, it is exploiting users’ #trust and the dominant position that a platform enjoys by dint of #networkeffects. Nice piece that sees high-tech rent-seeking at work. #Bigtech #digitalculture #AI

A recent article from WIRED explains how Meta is using online data — often showcasing photos of family gatherings, milestones and other memorable events — to enhance its algorithm to better understand and reflect the human experience. While there is no doubt in the power of AI, it can’t replace the value of real-life experiences. For example, just about everywhere I turn, I hear stories about people's first experiences with the Original WD-40 Formula — whether spotting the blue and yellow can with the little red top in Grandpa’s garage, their first time fixing a squeaky door, or how they brought an item back to life. These anecdotes remind us that while technology advances and algorithms evolve, the human connection fostered through shared experiences remains timeless and unbeatable. https://lnkd.in/gVtefcrU

Here's my Digiday recap of yesterday's news the new open-source LLM and the updated Meta AI arriving across various apps. It’s too soon to tell how Llama 3 could provide new opportunities and challenges for companies and users alike. However, it's likely to still raise similar concerns when it comes to IP, data privacy and misinformation. It’s also unclear how usage of Meta AI might impact the ways users consume information — especially as Meta moves away from partnerships with publishers and removes tools like the news tab in the U.S. and Australia. P.S. — I'll post links in the comments with a few of my own quick findings from testing the way Meta AI sources/cites news.
