The 2050 net zero ambition set by the EU is increasingly looking unrealistic, as early EU election polls indicate the left-wing parties will lose their collective majority, amid a surge in support for right-wing factions. The ramifications of this are far reaching, and threaten to upend progress made by The Green Deal since 2020. Looking ahead to this year, there are significant elections across the globe that are likely to have an impact not only on #journalism freedom, but on the safety of our colleagues. News organisations need to ensure they have strategies in place to recognise the threats to their journalists, to mitigate the risks, to have crisis management and contingency plans in place, which mean support structures, before, during and after difficult events. Too often I see organisations surprised by stories and circumstances that they should have been able to see coming, spending vast amounts of money when a little bit of foresight could have reduced this expenditure. Planning does reduce the safety risk. Planning also reduces the costs. It helps resources - it makes for more sustainable journalism and it sustains journalists. #mentalhealth #crisismanagement #leadership #strategicplanning

📆 Thursday | 13 June | European elections 2024: what will the future look like? Last week’s European Elections will shape the European political landscape for the next five years. Will the new mandate uphold the status quo and the bloc’s existing commitments to social justice, economic equality or democratic integrity? Or will we see a more dramatic rupture with the current set-up? To unpack these election results, we will be joined by Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and European Commissioner, for an Instant Briefing. By examining the electoral outcome, we will analyse the way the composition of the new European Parliament and Commission may influence the objectives of Friends of Europe’s Renewed Social Contract for Europe by 2030 initiative. ⤵️ Learn more below. #Voices4Choices #EUElections2024 #InConversationWith #RenewedSocialContract

#PolicyBrief Lauro Panella: The Cost of non-Europe In June 2024, millions of citizens will participate in shaping the future of European democracy and its political priorities for 2024-2029. Results from the Eurobarometer show that interest in European elections, or the likelihood of voting in the latter, is positive and higher than in autumn 2018 before the previous European elections of 2019. The 2024 European elections represent an opportunity to define the path of ambitious common European action to weather the challenges ahead. Are Europeans aware of their historical role in these elections? Will citizens, given the option, choose the path of a stronger Europe that can better tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow? 🖇 Read it at: https://lnkd.in/dEjjsj2e
