Sympatex Supports Advancing Recyclability: Driving Towards a Circular Textile Industry What an engaging dialogue at #IFAT2024 in Munich today! Kim Scholze participated in the panel discussion “Fashion Too Fast – Uniting Recyclers, Producers, and Policymakers for a Circular Textile Economy” which brought together key industry leaders to address the challenges of textile recycling. The discussion highlighted the need of responsible sorters and recyclers and textiles designed with their end of life in mind. Upcoming EU legislation, such as the Ecodesign Regulation and the Waste Framework Directive, will soon require producers to make their products recyclable. Thank you, Dr. Wolfgang Trunk (Team Leader at DG ENVI, European Commission), Emily Bolon (CEO at Looper Textile Co.), and Agnes Bünemann (Managing Director at cyclos GmbH) for listening and sharing ideas, especially the importance of ambitious EU targets regarding recycling content such as fiber2fiber. And a big thanks also to BDE Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs-, Wasser- und Kreislaufwirtschaft e. V. for organizing this important panel! The discussion in the cross-industry lounge emphasized the importance of the recycling industry to the textile sector and the need for the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). Sympatex advocates for a comprehensive approach to recyclability in the upcoming ESPR Delegated Act for Apparel, emphasising the need for clear standards, legislative support, and ambitious eco-design measures. RECYCLING process from excessive productions of garments currently requires a lot of resources and power. Renewcell, Sweden, opened its factory/warehouse last year to process shredded cotton + denim textile waste from used and unused products from Germany, Switzerland and nearby countries. Renewcell then turned the waste into Circulose, a sand paper feel fibres, that "potentially“ could be reloomed. The new plant is able to process 600,000 tons of textile waste by next year but the EU countries generated more than 7mil tons in 2020 alone. To enable a circular textile value chain, automated sorting and processing of post-consumer textiles is a key challenge. We present the current state of the art and highlight the need for further development and collaboration.  Dr. Thilo Becker, TOMRA Recycling will present the latest insights during his lecture at the Dornbirn-GFC 2024. The global textile fiber market, which is now estimated to be worth €270 billion, is an essential part of the global economic landscape. However, as textile production has doubled worldwide in the last 20 years, it is also an industry putting tremendous strain on our already dwindling virgin resources and compromising the health of our planet. Today, the textile industry is one of the largest contributors to global emissions. To create a circular textiles value chain, all stakeholders must collaborate to transform design and production processes, improve technological efficiencies, and alter the way consumers purchase, use, and dispose of textiles.
