GLP-1 drugs can solve the affordability puzzle in CPG (packaged foods) in a big way. Cost of Unhealthy Food per calorie consumed is many times lower than that of Healthy food. This explains it’s high prevalence. However, at a portion level, it might actually be at par or eventually cheaper. With 12% of world population globally expected to take GLP-1 medication over the next 2 decades, it will induce natural calorie inhibition. Calorie no longer becomes a key factor variable. Assuming total expenditure on food remaining the same, %age of healthy items would increase. This in turn kicks in a virtuous cycle, where economies of scale would suppress health premiums for non-GLP audience too (40% of food costs attributes to FIXED COST in supply chain, which gets economised at scale) CPG is up for re-invention over the next few decades. Packaged food CEOs already calling Novo Nordisk out of worry. Clean brands should win big. And then we have people like Revant Himatsingka (Food Pharmer) already solving the awareness puzzle. Affordability soon to be solved too.
