Over the last decades, many enterprises allowed a layer to emerge between them and value and then paid rent to use it - A large brand was happy to have GMV of a few billion on Amazon in 2020, after Covid forced them to explore e-commerce, when they could have created a Jet.com themselves or bought one of the several startups that Amazon bought (Zappos, diapers.com) and learnt e-commerce from them. - Telcos complain about the costs of video traffic when they could have created YouTube and Netflix with captive audiences. They could also have created AppStore or WhatsApp if they had experimented instead of thinking VAS and SMS were cash cows. - Advertisers using ML for optimizing spend on social media in 2024 when they could have built social media or at least invested in Facebook in 2014 when engagement and time spent were super clear. I already thought that corporate leaders who are not experimenting with and evaluating AI, while they wait for the Godot of AGI are running a similar risk. They may find in a few years that they are paying rent to a newly-emerged layer when they could have created assets for themselves. Now valley insiders are pointing out, not the small risks of future cost, but existential risks. The risks are to the current disruptors themselves including those with seemingly robust data and behavioral assets. Hiring post day (3/n) In Jan 2024 Sam Altman was at a Q&A when someone asked, "How will you make money?" He responded, "we will build the best AI and then one day ask it how to make money". Everyone laughed. After building an Agentic Revenue Bot, I can see just how serious (and true) Sam was being. In the coming years, Sales AGIs will be apart of the board room. Instead of CROs just asking their top performers and managers how to increase pipeline, we'll be talking to our AIs. It'll be less of an oracle, but more of a "recommender" -> once we give context clues from our calendars, CRM, and the market (inputs), the AI will be able to give some great strategies to commit on (outputs - more revenue).
