FARE Idaho is a non-profit trade association that advocates for Idaho’s independent restaurants, family farms, retailers, food and beverage producers. Our mission is to connect, align, and promote the shared interests of Idaho’s independent restaurants, family farms, food and beverage businesses. Last week, my fellow Jackson Healthcare team members and I made sandwiches for The Sandwich Project TSP. Regrettably, I didn’t get a picture with my table-mates because I was too busy slathering peanut butter on slices of bread (that was my role in our assembly line). Our gathering started as an all-hands company meeting. Our president and other department team members gave updates on our collective efforts as an organization this year, where we’re headed, and how to best to support our family of companies and one another along the way. Then we took a short break. We came back to the same room several minutes later with a new objective- to roll up our sleeves, make sandwiches for local food insecure people, and in the process, find fellowship with one another. There was something powerful about over a hundred team members working side by side, quite literally hand in hand, to serve a greater purpose for someone we'll likely never meet. My takeaway from our team event: doing the small, precise, hands-on work (in my case peanut buttering bread) can help to center you. It helps to put the big, complicated things into focus. Here was a living example of many hands make light work. And I’m not just talking about the sandwiches. Each day we hand out bagged meals to our clients who work offsite along with individuals who come to our front door seeking a meal. As summer approaches, and our need for bagged meals increases, you can help us feed the hungry by joining our Meal Bag Program and packing meals that we can hand out to those who need them! Here's how you can get started: 1. Pack lunches in a clear Ziploc bag and fill them with a granola bar or cracker pack, a small bag of chips or pretzels, a fruit cup packed in fruit juice (not syrup); raisins; or dried fruit 2. Please purchase items to make a sandwich (loaves of bread, turkey or ham slices, etc.) but do not pre-make the sandwiches 3. Optional— add a note of encouragement to let the person receiving the bagged meal know they are loved! 4. Knowing in warmer months we can hand out up to 200 meal bags a day, we kindly ask that you prepare and deliver at least 40 meals at a time. 5. Vote “No” on Question 5 in Massachusetts this November. Tip Minimum increase from $15 to $20 will increase the Menu Costs or “Service” fees at your favorite local restaurants, especially smaller restaurant groups. Most Hospitality Workers would go elsewhere if they were looking for a stable bi-weekly paycheck. By increasing the tip minimum to $20, tips will decrease and the industry will lose our most talented individuals. Most Servers land somewhere between $25-$40 with the most competent exceeding that range; the system benefits owner/operators and employees alike. Increasing Tip Minimums hurt the Consumer via increased prices and the Worker by consequently impacting the Earning Potential. Making uninformed decisions hurts people, ask a Server if they would rather make $20 or $45 an hour; you would be outraged if your livelihood was at risk. The California Government can do whatever it wants, leave Massachusetts restaurants alone.

Saturday, April 20, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, is our day for an ALA-Oregon Chapter fun-filled social event full of camaraderie, bowling, and food! Register by April 10! Several of you participated in past events supporting the Sunshine Division, and we want to continue that support! We are hoping that you can bring one or more non-perishable food items for donation to the Sunshine Division as your entrance to this event—the more the better! This is an exciting opportunity to connect with your fellow members and business partner colleagues while we continue our support of a local community partner. Perhaps a bit of competitive bowling or competitive eating—who knows! Knowing that weekends are often family time, our event is open to your +1 and kids. The Grand Central Bowling venue should be a fun way to mix and mingle, enjoy some good food, enjoy bowling at your leisure, or take in a few arcade game activities.
