Exciting news! I had the privilege of speaking on "The Urgency of Employee Retention" at the Mini CiderCon® Webinar Series today. Back in January, I was scheduled to speak at CiderCon® 2024, but due to snow and ice, I was unable to present at the conference. CiderCon® is the premier cider conference for industry professionals, providing an opportunity to learn, share, taste and network. In my presentation, I discussed the critical nature of retaining employees for the sustainability of your organization. We took a deep dive into employee recruitment and retention to discover what is effective and ineffective in the current approach. I shared lessons learned from managing a successful workforce development initiative, discussed potential pitfalls that can come up and highlighted what success looks like for both employees and employers. Recruiting talent is important, but retaining employees is even more critical. The presentation was intended to provide a renewed understanding of what is needed as organizations think about creating or enhancing their recruitment and retention approach. Talking w/ Civility @ Work ☮ Heard an interview this morning on Marketplace by APM with SHRM President Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP and David Brancaccio about how to process divisive topics at work, such as the attempted assassination of former President Trump. One example from the interview that stood out to me was TEACHING people how to have these conversations and having clear POLICIES/GUARDRAILS. Brancaccio: ...I once saw sign in a bar that said, “No Trump Biden talk.” And what about that rule for a workplace? Don’t discuss politics. Taylor: So, it’s kind of hard to say and enforce a policy of “No policy, no discussions around politics in the workplace.” And thus, the point: We’ve got to teach people how to have those conversations and place guardrails in place. We’ve got to establish very clear policies about where having an opinion can turn into badgering, harassing someone in the workplace — and then it’s not something we’re going to tolerate.

#SHRM is leading the way on how to promote #civility in the workplace. This is also a broader issue that we must all take personal responsibility for helping to improve. It used to be that if you did not like an elected official, you made your choice at the ballot box. How about we bring that back?
