“Culture eats strategy for breakfast” Just listened to Sir Graham Henry sharing his words of wisdom on team building and team culture at #retailfest in Christchurch. The value I took away from that share was far greater than I could have imagined. Ted transformed the All Blacks after going to one of the team Court Sessions after he was invited by the team (before he became coach). He was disgraced and didn’t want a part in it. But he chatted to the senior coaches and players and they felt it could be transformed. They built a senior leadership team consisting of “6 old people” him being the oldest and 7 players, including the likes of Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. And they focused on: - be humble, you can always get better, better never stops, - Integrity; do what you say you’re gonna do - Team first: knowledge of your team - Solution focused - Connection: the more we connected, the better we played - Simplicity: Dan Carter, member of the leadership team was a big advocate for simplicity …”you can’t play the game well if it’s too difficult” - Learning from adversity…it’s when you learn the most - The more you exercise the better you feel and the better you connect - Control your own environment….”when we played bad I never read any media, when we played well you couldnt get a newspaper because I had them all” - Having a HIGH expectation for your team There was more obtained from that. Tips shared on how to transform a bad culture etc, how to handle a bad individual, such as exact steps. But wow. Just a legend. Had to share.
