  Last year evian introduced its first-of-a-kind refill system for players at Wimbledon, as part of a joint effort to reduce plastics during The Championships. This year they’ve expanded their offering, allowing spectators to buy unlimited refills of their mineral water at evian refill stations across the grounds, including at the food courts & via mobile carts. Or you could buy your own refillable bottle as a keep-sake. Of course, the public can and do use the mains tap water refill stations across the Wimbledon site. But some people want mineral water and are used to the convenience of buying bottled water everywhere they go. Given the shocking numbers of single-use plastic bottles bought at events, this is a vital first step to change the sector and put refill and reuse centre-stage, or should that be centre-court. We need companies to design out waste so circular living can become the norm for all of us. And this is an innovative response to the championship challenge for the industry (these bad puns could run and run). As part of Danone UK & Ireland, evian is a member of the #UKPlasticsPact. They chose Wimbledon, one of the world’s most viewed sporting events, to showcase a reuse and refill model to highlight how refill can become an active part of people’s everyday habits. Heineken for breakfast? 🔥🦁🔥 Did you know that Heineken's founder, Alfred Heineken, was a sustainability trailblazer in construction? 🍃🏠 In the 1960s, he collaborated with architect John Habraken to address the issue of discarded beer bottles in Dutch Antilles. Inspired by the need for recycling, they created the WOBO bottle – a reusable bottle designed to serve as a building block after use. 🌱🍻 Despite initial challenges, Heineken had 100,000 WOBO bottles made in 1964, marking an early venture into sustainable packaging for construction. This visionary initiative, though met with skepticism, resulted in Heineken building a garden house from WOBO bottles in his own backyard. 🏡💚 Fast forward a decade, and the project gained recognition as one of the first industrial efforts for recyclable packaging in construction. Seaweed packaging scores with UK and Ireland sports venues in sustinable shift UK-based start-up Notpla announced a partnership with Levy, part of Compass Group UK & Ireland, to distribute 75 million seaweed-based, biodegradable food service packaging items across various UK and Ireland sports and entertainment venues over the next three years. This initiative, supported by over 50 sites, including The Kia Oval - Surrey County Cricket Club and Twickenham Stadium, utilises Notpla’s innovative packaging made from seaweed, offering a more sustainable alternative to single-use plastics. The collaboration aims to significantly reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, with Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) indicating a potential 70% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional packaging. The announcement by Nestlé International Travel Retail (NITR) regarding the introduction of recyclable paper packaging for its Quality Street line represents a commendable step towards sustainability. However, the overall sustainability of the product must be assessed holistically, taking into account factors beyond just packaging materials. While the shift to recyclable paper packaging is a positive development, the nutritional profile of the product itself cannot be overlooked. Quality Street chocolates, known for their indulgent and often high-sugar content, may not align with broader sustainability goals, particularly concerning public health and environmental impact. Moreover, the introduction of new paper sharing packs, while reducing reliance on virgin plastic, may still pose challenges in terms of sustainability. Despite the use of recyclable materials, the energy and resources required for production, transportation, and disposal of these packs must be considered. Furthermore, the nutritional value of Quality Street chocolates, as indicated by a Nutri-Score E rating, raises concerns about their contribution to unhealthy dietary patterns and associated health issues. Promoting and consuming products with low nutritional quality contradicts efforts to promote sustainable and healthy food systems. In this context, achieving true sustainability for the Quality Street line would require not only eco-friendly packaging but also a reformulation of the product to improve its nutritional profile. Additionally, efforts to educate consumers about the environmental and health impacts of their purchasing decisions are essential for fostering more sustainable consumption patterns.
