Sight Words comprise over 50% of the words we read in everyday, non-technical texts. Research finds a significant correlation between reading sight words and improved reading abilities. Because we know literacy is a critical skill youth need to thrive, TCCNY has implemented Literacy Leaders in all K-1 programming, increasing our participants' sight word acquisition and preparing them to read at grade level. WITS is the largest provider of no-cost literacy enrichment programming and activator of corporate partnerships in Chicago Public Schools. Currently, fifty-six percent of adults in America are functionally illiterate and unable to comprehend text beyond a sixth-grade level. For context, most newspapers in America are written at an eleventh-grade level. Being unable to read does not happen when you are an adult; it happens when you are a kid. If only twenty-six percent of Chicago elementary students are meeting literacy benchmarks right now, what does that mean for the future of Chicago? So, what makes a reader? You. While students are on summer break, educators across West Michigan are taking steps to improve early literacy. Many are engaged in professional development to review and implement evidence-based curricula and proven instructional practices. But it's important to remember that we all have a stake in this. Parents, school board members, community leaders, higher education and employers have a role to play. The findings of our survey of child vision screening services in England highlight a concerning rise in the number of local authorities not offering any form of reception-age screening. Since 2019, a further five local authorities have decommissioned services, meaning that around 75,000 children miss out every year. There is a risk this could result in visual defects in children going undetected and potentially becoming irreversible. In addition, undetected vision problems can prevent children from fully accessing their education. Read more and access our interactive map: https://buff.ly/4evQbnL
