Pan-United has long been a committed advocate for the adoption of greener building materials, such as low-carbon concrete. It is important for developers and owners to integrate whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) into the project planning. 2030 Commitment Challenge For the 14th consecutive year, SmithGroup measured the energy use of the buildings we designed and reported our progress to the AIA as part of the 2030 commitment. On average, our designs achieved a 57.2% reduction in energy – our best result ever. Last year, we designed over 665,000 SF of buildings that met the 2030 challenge target of 80% better than average. From the data we collected, SmithGroup’s 2023 portfolio saved around 303,000 MT CO2e/year over the 2030 baseline. That’s the equivalent to the carbon that would be sequestered by 353,000 acres of US forest in one year. #SmithGroup #DesignaBetterFuture

With the construction industry accounting for 40% of all carbon emissions globally, it's important to look at how those figures can be reduced, but also consider the whole life carbon of a building.
